FJ-62 Exhaust Pipes - cast iron or steel?
Is the portion of the exhaust pipes between the manifolds and the catalytic converters on an FJ-62 steel or cast? I seem to remember hearing something about these being cast. Just want to confirm before I attempt to weld new pipe in.

Manifold to cats on mine is standard steel exhaust tubing. Only the Exhaust Manifold itself it Cast.

Define manifold. I think the exhaust pipe coming out of the exhaust port on the head is cast iron for a good 12-18 inches. If that is what you are calling the manifold then I agree--it's cast. Correct me if I am wrong, those tubes coming out of the head/manifold are cast. After that there is a union and it all turns to steel tubing. Correct? I have heard that putting a tuned exhaust on this engine increases performance and gas mileage. Anyone have any experience with that?

I used to run the header that's available. It leaked like crazy at the flanges to the downpipes (not the flange on the head) and put off enough heat to melt some of the split loom running above the header. There was some extra power but not worth it in my opinion. Others have had better luck.
I cut the stock pipes off of the stock downpipe flanges last weekend and welded new pipes on as part of my exhaust rebuild project. If you chop the stock weld on the flange you can hammer the stock pipe out of the flange. New pipes welded up nice to the stock flange (TIG). I got some short sections that are 1.7" OD for about 3" and then transition to 2". The 1.7" OD fit into the stock flange perfectly. I'll post pics when I'm done. __________________ Joel '89 FJ-62 |
