New front door speaker built from the old

I put a set of 4" speakers in the front doors using the OEM speakers as a frame. If you dremel out the basket, the hole is a perfect fit for a 4" speaker. This has a couple advantages; 1) you can use the OEM gasket & seal and 2) mounting depth for 4" speakers won't cause intereference with the window that occurs with larger 5-1/4 or 6-1/2 drivers, 3) keeps the OEM grills.

Sounds sooooo much better!

Did you try winding the window all the way down yet?

I was so stoked when I mounted a nice pair of Polk's in my 60 as well one time. Got everything all back together real neat and nice.
Went for a test ride and found the window hit the back of the speaker and wouldn't allow it to fully wind down.
Fire literally shot out of my eye sockets.

Yep, it was the first thing I tried. No interference what so ever!

Good man.
Enjoy the great sounds.
After my anger subsided, I eventually went back and got speakers that low profile.

ad20k, Great suggestion for those of us who don't want to bugger nice trucks. What speakers did you use?

Rick

4 inch speakers arent going to sound too hot. just get a shallow depth 5-1/4 or 6-1/2 speaker and backload it behind the door panel so you can use the stock grill. whats with the zip ties? use a 1/8" drill bit for pilot holes and mount those bad boys with screws.

I used the Phoenix Gold v4.0 speakers from www.partsexpress.com. They were about $40 delivered. Mounting depth is specified as 2.0" or 1.75" for surface mount. Good value speaker for the budget minded.

They lack low end but the rear speakers seem to fill in the low end just fine. Agreed the zip ties might be temporary, but hey, zip ties held down the hood on my civic for years!
