Why Coarse Spline Pinions suck butt.

Well, yesterday, the Rock Gardens of Aztec NM claimed 3 of 4 trucks. An long side axle on a 40, an outer yoke on a Dodge (a narrowed, bobbed rock rig) and my lovely coarse splined pinion gear. dissasembling a rear end just to get the chunk out and re-assembling it (with an Aussie and new brakes) just to limp home 4WD high-one legging off the front 50 miles is NOT fun, but I guess I signed up for that reality when I took 'er out. Thanks to Steve Powers wrenchin most of the diff. stuff.

More pics as they come in from different cameras...

Howdy! Looks like fun to me. I broke mine between the inner and outer bearings due to axle wrap about 8 years ago. This was before (and why) I build my anit-wrap bar. Also broke a Birf at the same time. Had to leave it and come back two days later for the rescue. Ain't no fun, that's for sure!! John

The no-see-ums ate us alive.

The nice part was that the truck came to rest right on the edge of a 4 and a half foot drop off so we lowered the tailgate, hung a tarp over the edge and could stand in the shade to work on it (like a underground service bay) we weren't so lucky on the 40 (laying in the sand for that one)

Mine broke at 2:00am during a nighttime run. Moonlight Madness east of fresno to be exact. No sun to worry about. 7,000ft elevation so no bugs to worry about.

Sick AND twisted. Was that from a paticular moment or are you thinking it let go over time?

Rick
I was climbing a rather steep rock wall with a couple little divots in it and it was pretty long (about three truck lengths) it was about to stall so I tried to get my R's back by feathering the clutch. I engaged too much, started sliding back down and rather then just using my brakes to slide back down, I tried to accelerate back up while drifting backwards.=spring wrap as weak said and SNAP. So it was user error for sure.

Pix of the wall to come

So is the concensus that a wrap bar makes coarse spline pinions acceptable to run? I have a few 4.10 thirds laying around and thinking about using them on my 60 to get a bit more gearing until funding rolls in for some steeper gears.
Just a bit nervous with tall tires and deep t-case gearing.

So are course spline gears anything over like 4.11's or are all the gears in our cruiser course spline?

It's a matter of when they were made. I think Toyota changed to fine spline around 1980. All aftermarket sets are fine spline.

That's the impression I get. Basically all SUA are okay unless they are not stock springs (i.e. softer lifted springs like my Alcans) because the wrap doesn't have enough throw. so lifted SUA or SOA are gonna wrap unless barred

Yeah, she's gonna need Fine Spline Yukon R&P, a wrap bar and a Marlin Toybox and I suppose new driveshafts. (as long as the driveshaft pogo I did didn't mess up the transfercase---I don't think it got hurt since I was able to limp home on the front driveshaft)

New gameplan

Actually, now the gameplan is to replace the gearset in the transfercase to give me a slight overdrive (7or8%) in hi-range and a 55% reduction in 4 low. That way I'm crawlin better without bracing a toybox and keeping driveshaft lengths the same. Still gonna put a wrap bar on though. Something like a JKCustoms

Howdy! Well there is no guarantee that it will hold up, but an anti-wrap bar setup will certainly increase your odds a whole bunch. I run tons of 2wd low range now that I have mine. Go for it. Like you said, you have a few spares, so put 2 in and carry one for backup. John
