cracked dash-what to do
My 62 originally lived in S. Cal and has some significant cracks in the dash. It came to me with a carpeted dash cover, but I've found it to inhibit windshield defrosting, even after I trimmed it down, so it's been discarded.
Is their an option to buying another dash, or dash cover? Not sure I want to fork out a couple hundred bucks for this issue. I have no idea how fast this problem will progress, and if it does whether or not a dash cover wouldn't work in the future if pieces eventually start falling out. The climate here is the opposite of S. Cal-almost never sunny. __________________ Bret Juneau, Ak 1989 FJ62 3FE 122K 1992 Toy short cab 4x4 22RE 175K |

There are two plastic Dash covers that i know of.
The Specter off road one - 100$ and a JCwhitney one for about 60$ People like the SOR one - good match and installs pretty easily. and I've never heard anything about the JCW one. __________________ - 1983 FJ60 - 229K 2.5" Man-a-fre HD leaf springs, HFS shocks 4runner Calipers, 4.11 thirds 33x10.50MT's Wilderness Roof Rack CORN TACO - DD - 2005 Tacoma Double cab with Ethanol full flex converter ARB Front bumper w. warn winch and PIAA lights 3" Toy Tec Lift Rock-tec rear bumper |

I had an SOR cover but it cracked soon after I installed it. Probably b/c my dash underneath was pretty beat. I then replaced it with a used one from cruiserparts. Replacing the dash is not hard and takes about an hour or two. Shipping to AK might get a bit steep though.

Thanks for the responses. Shipping is definitely a killer-I'm looking at over $100 on shipping for the dash cover. I see Man-A-Fre also is selling a dash over for about $10 less than Specter. Anyone tried that one out?

Good idea, but that's not the animal I need. Dash cover for FJ62 has a different cut.

Why not go to the 'parting out' section here on MUD, you might get lucky with the avalibility & location. I know you have a 62, but I found a 60 dash close by for $60. Worth a look anyway.

I bought a used one from cruiserparts.net. It was in great shape but wasn't cheap. Installation took a couple of hours but looks really nice.

Good idea above, but you posted this up one day after the end time of the bid. The "buy it now" price wasn't a deal-wonder what the purchase price was. I've ordered the SOR cap, along with the driver's seat belt receptacle. $90 in shipping!

Did ya glue it in the center? My instructions for the SOR cover warned about doing this, as it won't allow for the piece to expand and contract. So, mine is in and it looks good. One caveat is that the instructions also mention that the dash "may" have to be removed in order to install the cover. The problem is the side vents because the screw covers for them are in the way. With mine, I removed the screws with the dash in place and put the cover on. I plan to put the front screws back in, but the back ones seem impossible to put back. There's just no room in there.

x2 post an ad in the wanted section, or watch the parting out closely. Lots of clean trucks are parted. My 84 only has a crack on the speaker grill, so I imagine a later 62 is going to be more likely to be perfect from a colder state.

Gashog, You should be able to buy a solid FJ62 dashcap from a junk yard for 125-150. At least that's the going rate here on Long Island. Good luck.

Hers's one from outside the box: I recently had my rocker panels sprayed with bedliner. While talking to the manager, I heard that they had sprayed a vinyl dash board (vehicle unspecified..perhaps a Taurus) with Armorthane. He said it worked out fine. Anyone have knowledge on this approach??
