Real Time, well sort of.....
I dropped my 84 Fj60 off at the garage to have a valve adjustment and to have the Carb rebuilt since I've completed a 95% desmog.
I picked it up today, popped the hood to check out the Carb. What I found to me is a brand new Carb. I called the Mech and he insures me that it has been removed and thouroughly cleaned. Well let me tell you what. It looks brand new. How can I tell if my orig carb was taken out and some imposter put in? Under the itemized bill, it states Carb $358.00. That sounds to me that the old was pulled and a new put in. What do you all think? I will take some pics and post them later today. Thanks so much. __________________ 84' tan, fj60, "TOMBI" CURRENLY: Somewhere in Afghanistan, NORMALY: San Clemente, CA Chris and Andrea Manella TLCA# 14563 2.5 Heavy OME with Rear Spacer to correct Cruiser Lean, H55, New Transfer Case, Headers, 4" Pipe and Magnaflow, 90% Desmoged, SOR Duck Seat covers, Dark Tint, Tuffy Box, SOR Cargo, Front and Rear Mats, 62 Style side Mirrors, K&N, 32x11.5x15 BFG A/T. personally i dont see any percentage in replacing the carb and then saying it was merely rebuilt. maybe the other way around makes sense. if it did turn out to be a brand new i would be happy. a dunk in the hot tank can do wonders for the look of a carb.

If it is a new carb - is this a bad thing?
A new OEM carb runs about $600+. My guess is that for $385 you either had yours rebuilt or they installed a rebuilt carb that was rebuilt by a third party supplier. If it was rebuilt and had some parts bead blasted or thouroughly cleaned, it would be tough to tell if it was new or not if it is installed. So if it is new, good for you! If it is rebuilt, the price is pretty much what you would expect. OPr am I missing something? __________________ 87 FJ60 31 x10.5 Silent Armors, LEDed, H4ed, Damplified, 4Runner calipered, and re-knuckled |

If you look closely to the pic of the fuel window, what does that say there? Is that an after market carb or my original? I just wanted to keep the original carb with my truck. Thanks for all your replies.

Just try and git it.

Is the truck in CA? How can you do a desmog? Is it off-road only?
Carb looks rebuilt. Only registered shops in CA, now, can get the "real" caustic stuff to clean parts -- Also, they may have used a heated washer... Makes stuff look new. Wish I had one. But they probably just swapped out for a rebuilt unit. Ask for the core back and pay for it. |

That's an OEM carb - it says "Aisin."
I can't tell for sure, but I would venture a guess it is rebuilt. There appear to be toolmarks visible, but I am by no means 100% certain. So now you know you still have an OEM carb, albeit maybe not your original carb. So the only question is "how does it run." Sure looks pretty though! __________________ 87 FJ60 31 x10.5 Silent Armors, LEDed, H4ed, Damplified, 4Runner calipered, and re-knuckled |

New OEM carbs run 800+. Rebuilds typically run 300+. Then there's installation and misc other stuff. __________________ Doug G Seattle, WA TLCA#12671 1994 fzj80, 275,000 miles, 285X75/15, Billy's, dual batteries 1987 fj60, 310,00 miles, 3" lift, 33X10.50's BFG MT, dual battery, rear drawers, CB, tuffy, 4.10's and H41 soon |

With your two trucks you oughta know what "Aisan" is when you see it.

Vac hoses are hooked up incorrectly.
To tell if it is the original carb, check the date code. __________________ Thanks, Jim C. TLC Performance Underhood Janitor, cleaning up other people's since 1988.
