Freds40 builds a 60
Alright, we finally got Weak-Link taken care of ( http://forum.ih8mud.com/60-series-wa...-60-bulid.html) and now it's my turn.
My last build was a 40 Freds40s' 64' 40
I absolutely loved that rig but I wanted something that I can drive on the street and do long road trips with wheeling mixed in.
I picked my 60 up from Weak-Link for a song and figured the kids and wife would like this a lot more than the 40 so I changed gears.
I really like how Jason's build turned out but it is a bit more than I'm looking for in this rig. I don't really want to lift this all that much and I'm shying away from an uber wide tire. Plus the red L.E.D. dome light gives me head aches.
Anyway, here it is. It's an 85 with what appears to be bad 2nd gear synchros.

One thing I want to address is the paint. It has a nice layer of oxidation. I have some good rubbing compound that does a good job, I just need to take the time to get after it. I'm trying to convince the wife this would be a great way to get involved in the project.
You can see the test spot I did on the back corner. Can't tell from the pic but I can actually see myself in the paint now.

Jason had the top end torn apart for a 2FE install but he decided to build the other truck. I figured since the head was off I might as well get it cleaned up. I had it shaved .050 and got a 3 angle valve job.
I just got the carb sent off to JimC so that will help driveability immensly as well.
That's about it for now. Hopefully I'll have the time to get this thing up and running in short order so I can enjoy the summer up the hill and out of the heat.

Good base truck. This should be a fun little project. Are you buffing by hand? It will be worth it's weight in Ben Gay to buy a high speed buffer.

I was originally going to buff by hand but I think I'll see if the old man still has his electric buffer.

Not completely sure just yet. I'll run a small lift, don't want anything too tall.

Welcome aboard the 60 Wagon train. Does the switch from a 40 mean you are getting smarter or older?
The truck appears to be straight and stock. Great find!
Will you do the tranny yourself?

My oldest daughter, 4, LOVED going camping and wheeling in the 40. My youngest is now 15 months old. I had high hopes of getting them all in the 40 but I know this will be a whole lot easier. The wife is pretty excited about the 60. In a few years, I'll probably build another truck to hammer on, but I'll keep the 60 for the family camping trips.
Yup, I'll handle the tranny.

Good on ya. Taking the family camping in the longer wheel base 60 will be awesome.
If my experience is universal, your kids will always remember the camping trips of their early years. Great memory making!

Got the mud flaps taken off. I just think it looks more "offroad" without them. Jason held the wrench while I worked the ratchet.
Picked up a knuckle rebuild kit from Marlin a couple of weeks back. It's a bit rough down there.

So what's the verdict on yours. You still coming with on Sunday, at least in your own rig?

Got a little work done tonight.
Front end is completely disassembled.
Got some of the old brackets stripped off. I stopped cutting when I started a fire on the housing from all the grease/oil caked on it. I'll get the passenger side brackets lopped off tomorrow night.

Got the shackle hangers cut off.
Blew all the rivet heads. I'll drive them all out tomorrow night. They always come out easier after they've gone through a heating/cooling cycle.
Passenger side.

Nope. I'll be staying leafs. Heres the previous thread Weak-Link started about my rig a while back. http://forum.ih8mud.com/60-series-wa...-lift-rub.html
I haven't decided on the drivetrain just yet. I have a 465, 4.7 Toy box, and split case adapter sitting in my garage but I have another idea that I'm researching.
The front end is getting widened with the parts shown above from lcwizard. I'd been thinking of a way to get the front end wider and figured I'd turn out a set of sleeves and have some shafts built. Then I got turned onto lcwizards info and said screw it, no need to waste my time on the lathe.
The back end is another 1 off idea I've had rolling around in my head for a while. That one I'm pretty excited to get underway.

Sister got me those for Christmas a few years back as kind of a joke gift. I threw them in the 40 (visible by all the dirt on them) and Jason transplanted them to the 60. I think they've become a staple.

I sure hope you have a daughter. The light you are using to work on the front axles seems a bit girlish.

Took me a second. I couldn't figure out what was girlish about my neon yellow flood lights, then I remembered the Cinderella night light. My wife put it in the garage for the dogs.
BTW, I have 2 girls. My oldest (4) loved the 40 but thinks the 60 is so cool. She told me the other day"look daddy, this cruzer has doors so we don't fall out"
