I Broke It...

I went wheeling today (no pics sorry) and I believe I broke either my Fwd passenger side axle, or birfeild.. Happened on the 2nd or 3rd obstacle. Anyway, when I get on it, I heard a rapid grinding/rapping noise from that corner. I milked it back to the main road, and left it until the end of the day. On my trip back home, I just unlocked the hub's and drove highway speeds (for like 70mi ) to get home. Anyways, when I hit the brakes I hear a clunking noise from that corner and under speeds of 10 mph I can feel it grind and somewhat pull to the right too..

I am about to start pulling things apart, but almost don't want to. I'll be out of town here in a couple days, then a week after I get back, I go to Iraq.. So I either jump through my ass to get it back together, or; since I'll be gone for so long; drive it one last time to where I'm storing it and leave it.. Whats your thoughts on driving it one more time - maybe 50 mi.

Shouldn't take long to fix. A good day. Better to fix it now then not be able to drive it when you get home. I am sure there are some local cruiser heads around there to lend a hand. klinetime574 needs some more wrench experience.

Sounds like a Birf though.

Well it sounds like a great idea.. With my lack of time, though.. I don't know.. We'll see if I want to mess with it.

Update though - as I was crawling around under my truck, I can see where my Fwd drive shaft is rubbing the cross member underneath it.. Why would this be happening? Broken tranny mount? It's a good 3 inches of scrape-age on the shaft..

Unless your tranny mount is completely gone I don't believe it could scrape the cross member underneath the drive shaft.

Disconnect the driveline and see if it makes a difference. But I still think either a birf or a bad wheel bearing. If it is a bearing quick easy fix couple hours. Or you lost a caliper bolt. Pull that tire off first and give us some help with a pic.

I agree, I guess I have two issues here, the birf and drive shaft. Tomorrow I'll get into it and try to see whats going on with either of the problems.. Dark here- will try to get pics up tomorrow. I just don't see why the shaft would be rubbing - or how for that matter.

Is the shaft on backwards? If the fat end is up near the crossmember it would probably rub.

Ok, so the larger diameter side is supposed to be connected to the axle? If so, yup, my drive shaft is backwards.

You are right, my upper caliper bolt is missing... I guess that explains the noise while braking. My camera is MIA though. I hope it didn't get packed already.

I think I will start gathering parts for this. What all will I need? Knuckel rebuild kit, new birfield, ...? Is that it?

Maybe its time for the Longfields I've been looking at..

If you just want it back on the road. Flip the shaft and get a bolt for the caliper. Take it for a laast drive and put it up for the summer. BTW make sure you let's us know how it turns out.

Well, I have time for the parts to ship. If I have the parts, it may motivate me to get it done. And, if I ultimately decide not to do it, I'll enlist my uncle to do it while I am gone..

to replace the caliper bolt just get a new one and put em in and make sure they are tight. thats all.

I had a problem with my bolts on the driverside caliper coming out so i tapped em out to a 1/2 x 20 bolt and covered em in loc-tight after cleaning it all up real good and no more problems.

Not sure if I should go straight to the 30 spline; but I guess it makes more sense to go all the way rather than upgrade twice later on..

ARB locker part #: RD33?

Now that the drive shaft is facing the right way it looks like I should have no clearance problem hah! But, I may have knocked it out of balance.. I seriously removed almost half a pound maybe, of gunked up dirt/grease/mud/stuff caked on the shaft and inside the axle joints! Sure looks a lot better now!
