No, it is not normal....so it is totally appropriate here.

Quick update with pics! I took the day off to work on the 60 and get some landscaping done. This has been a good day; another milestone.

First couple pics of both ft/rr driveshafts after tearing down, cleaning, and painting:

Pics of firewall after 2nd coat of black:

Pic after dropping body onto frame; getting ready for quarter panel replacement:

Rolled out of the shop and hosed off. It's been a while since she's seen the daylight.

Pic of rear quarter...their days are numbered:

Here's a pic of the LR skin; ended up being a little rough after removing it from the donor so I'll be doing some hammer/dolly work:

Nice! What did you end up using to paint the firewall and and underside with? Single stage black?

Thanks! I ended up using a single stage black paint designed for implements (tractors and crap) from the local farm supply store. I reduced it and added a catalyst hardener to it to be able to spray it.

Here are some more pics from last night. I pulled the back glass and tailgate. Ended up finding a small spot of rust under the tailgate/hatch weatherstrip.

Sequence of events for rear glass removal:

First, remove chrome trim from weatherstrip.

Next, use a series of screwdrivers to work the inner weatherstrip up, out, and over the pinch weld:

Remove glass:

Other side:

Picture of the original root beer color; weatherstrip channels are really clean with no rust.

I then pulled the tailgate (its being replaced anyway) to make it easier to remove the quarter panels:

Rust spot under both bottom corners of weatherstrip. I have a feeling I'll be a rust repairing pro by the time this is done...

Cheers! We're going to the lake, so don't count on anymore updates today!

Okay, we spent Saturday and Sunday at the lake, so there was no time for the cruiser. I did get a few hours on it today; here's a quick update:

Ended up pulling all the doors, hatch glass, hatch, and windshield (which f***ing cracked during removal; oh well, it had a couple stars anyway).

My rust paranoia is growing, so I decided it made the most sense to pull the interior out to be sure everything was okay (also the reason I pulled the windshield).

Wouldn't you know, 3 more small rust spots (luckily these are all clean on the 2 patch panels I have):

As she sits now; time to hang out with my wife:

Hope everyone had a relaxing, productive Memorial Day weekend!

Seat Brackets

Keep up the good work!

My wheel wells looked like that where my seat brackets were too. There is a panel on the inner wheel wheel that that "holds" moisture until it rusts through to the inside. You can see the 3 vertical lines on yours where the raised portions are.

You are probably going to have to remove the inside metal (8? spotwelds) and the outer plate as well (12? spotwelds)

Here is mine from inside the wheel well. I didn't look too bad from the outside, but the inside was rusted like yours.

Yeah, I was noticing the correlation between the outer support bracket and the rusted area before I came in the house. How did you end up repairing yours? Was your outer brace salvageable? Mine has no signs of rust from the outside...and luckily the patch panels I have came with clean inner fender wells. This rust repair is fun stuff, huh?

Yeah, this is my favorite part of the project so far .

I removed the panels from the inside and the outside. The outer panel was rusted through in one spot. The inner panel (bracket) just needs cleaning up. The wheel well is shot... I will have to patch that.

Sorry, I haven't finished mine yet to show the end result...

I know these are the ultimate poser pics, but I flexed out the 60 last night to measure for shocks. Unfortunately, I had already bought BRAND NEW Toyota shocks....but they just won't work with the lift (I didn't expect to get this much height out of the AAL's/shackles). So, as a shameless plug, I've got the Toyota shocks listed in classifieds: http://forum.ih8mud.com/sale-parts/2...-shipping.html . If anyone is needing a set!

On to the photos:

Hey guys, remember me? Well, I'm still alive! I've been extremely busy (2 week trip to Japan & busy time at work) but I'm back and working on the cruiser again. Thought I'd share a few photos; I've been attacking the wheel well and tailgate area rust this morning:

Left seat bracket removed:

Right seat bracket removed:

Left inner wheel well; brace removed:

Luckily, my donor 1/4 has a clean wheel well:

Continued from above:

Tailgate weatherstrip seam rust; I decided to remove the entire lower seam:

Good thing too, because the entire underside is rusty:

Pic of the seam:

Back side of seam:

Now that the seam is off, I can address the rust:

Pic with section removed:

Right side (worst side):

Cutting out the rust:

Should be an easy patch to make:

Left side rust cut out:

Left inner fender rust cut out:

Picture of the cut out area:

From another angle:

I also installed my new shocks and painted/baked/installed the exhaust manifolds; no pics of that though.

I will hopefully make and install my patches this weekend.

Happy 4th of July!

Started making patches today. Couple quick photos; will hopefully start welding in this evening.

Cutting patch out of the donor 1/4:

Patch out; some rust, but should be manageable (now soaking in muriatic acid to clean remnants):

Bending patch for hatch opening:

Patch cut and test fitted; looking good so far:

Patch compared to old rusted section:

Patch for LH side:

Pic of all patches:

Time to weld em' in!~

You're a little patchin' fool!!!

We'll just call you "Patch" from now on.

Thanks for letting us see the insight of the very resto job you've been doing.

As i has been said, it is truly inspiring, even for a - man like myself.

Can't wait to see the end product (Although the progress has been just as, if not more, exciting!)

Very cool. Everything looks awesome including the nice working area you have.

If you don't mind me asking what kind of paint you used on the frame?
I'm getting a So. Cal rot free frame from Cruiserparts and plan on blasting it and repaint, and am trying get ideas on some good paint.

Thanks man! It's a semi-gloss black implement paint (sold at farm supply stores). I sprayed 2 coats of it over 2 coats of Rust Bullet. If you want to see pics, I think they are on the first or second page. Thanks again!

Here are a few pics with the first 2 patches welded in. They turned out pretty good.

I'm leaving the last patch out until I can get some Waxoyl or cavity wax to spray in the back x-member.

Here is a couple pics after smoothing the welds:

I also pulled out my replacement doors (the stockers are full of rust on the bottom seams). I stripped everything out of these, they all have varying degrees of dents/dings; but they are all 100% rust free. I started sanding them down tonight to prepare for bodywork.
