HELP! Stinky, Smoking EGR Hose?

So I was on the way to my new job just cruising the streets, then all of the sudden a god awful smell hit my nose, I thought it was something on the road. All gauges were normal; temp fine, Oil pressure never moves.
So I kept going, then on the way back it happened again. Then my brother and I popped the hood, and the smell got worse. We saw some smoke coming up in the area of the Carb fan and the brake booster. We look down there and smoke is just steadily creeping out. The flow stopped in about 15 seconds.

Not a great picture, my finger is "touching" the pipe which goes to a rubber hose, and on/around that joint is where the smoke came out.

We just left the hood open to let it cool of and maybe get better, because we had to go back. So we drive back. Happens again.

Work ended, and we stopped by my Dads for some experience (It was his car, he bought in '84) so we don't know what it is. We stood oustide for about 10 minutes in pouring rain to try and figure it out. Then after looking through a Spector catalog and an old chilton repair manual, we think it is the EGR hose.

Is that the EGR hose?

Why would this EGR get so hot, as to melt the hose?

What the crap is going on?

I think that's plumbing for your ABV to route air to the exhaust when the temp sensor in the cat determines it it needs it. The thread below mentions a check valve in there that is letting hot exhaust back toward the ABV
Air check valve stuck open

same problem last summer with mine

I was just driving along the Highway when this bad smell hit me along with some smoke. I pulled over and opened the hood with the fire ext. in hand to find that same rubber hose on fire. The fire went out on it own, I did have a lot of rubber neckers looking at this one it was rush hour. I determined the the check valve was bad, it was real PITA to get the old one off lots of heat with a torch was the ticket along with cussing at it. Do not waste your money on the oem hose it is just a $30 heater hose but do get the check valve from Toyota it was less than $20. Problem fixed for over a year now.

If you plug the tube I would think it would be fine. I would hate to have hot gasses blowing around the bay.

Okay, revival.

Got the new valve, and a used hose.

And I can't get the old valve off. And pretty darn sure that was the problem too. the neck on the valve that connects the hose to it was completely rusted off. whoops

Help me please

heat, swearing, and some elbow grease. Should do the trick.

Also, work on an intimidating stare. Scare that 'lil bugger right off.

That's how I approach my engine whenever it's acting up. Give it a steady glare, and it fixes itself.

Heat Heat and more Heat did I say Heat. This valve is a real PITA if you cuss at it that helps some then put more heat on it.

Okay, we just said screw it on the thing. We cut the pipe off, clamped it shut, then wrapped it in exhaust tape and put a hose clamp on it.

We figured that since my air pump isn't even working that we would just leave it alone.

Also one of my neighbors who is a mechanic, took a look at it and just said clamp it off. He also is going to give me a cat that works without the pump pushing air through it. So were all good.

I think a desmog is in my future.
