| 3,300 Miles in 6 Days (tech) I will be doing a cross-country road trip in a about a week in an 1986 FJ60 with 258k miles ont it.
(incase you didin't see the post in chat... 3,300 Miles in 6 Days)
Since i have never owned a 2F i'd appreciate some advise on what spare parts to bring at what you would recommend looking at before the journey. I will dedicate one evening to some basic service when I get out there, a job that requires more than hand tools I can probably have a shop do before I get out there. Here's what I was thinking...
Pre-trip service:
- Oil change
- top off tranny, t-case and diff fluids
- inspect/replace brakes pads
- inspect/replace bulbs
- inspect/replace air filter
- Fan clutch?
- replace fuel filter (where is the fuel filter on these?)
- inspect smog equipment?? (how?)
- inspect u-joints
- check battery/power
Shop work:
- flush radiator
- upper and lower radiator hoses
- replace water pump?
Stuff to bring:
- Set of hand tools
- spare belts
- vacuum hose
- engine oil
- gear oil
- lots of water
- extra spark plugs
- oil drain pan
- brake fluid
- zip ties
- service manuals
- flash light
- tire gauge
- duct tape
- tire plug kit
- compressor
- gloves
- alternator
- funnel
anything else?

| Where are you going to do this work? Do you plan on taking it to a shop out there? How are you going to take tools on the plane?

| HELL Yeah. This is going to be good.
Top of the list of stuff to bring needs to be every service manual you can get your hands on:
FSM for sure then also Haynes & Chiltons
Read them all cover to cover a couple of times.
Get the Cruiser Assistance Club list from Woody before you leave.
I'd say do a good check over like you say, then get rolling. Fix what breaks as you go. Maybe add your hikeing shoes to the list, in case you end up hiking. Get a haircut in case you end up hithchikeing.
I wouldn't do the water pump unless the weep hole is leaking.

| the work will likely be done in the parking lot of a parts store. I am a college student so I am wel versed in the art of shade tree mechanics...or shady mechanics under a tree? however that expression goes...
I plan to buy a tool set from walmart when i get there.....and maybe try and return it when I get back.... |

| Top and bottom radiator hoses. A radiator flush might be a good idea. Zip ties in various sizes, especially the big ones.
Are you towing anything?
Oh, don't forget to double check your spare tire. Maybe have a second spare tire on the roof or in the back. |

If the truck has been through any road salt the tire carrier may be inop. Life would totally suck if you needed the spare and couldn't get the damn thing to drop. Also make sure that you have the jack and the rod for lowering the spare.

| Ok, I joined this forum to find out info on cc trips. I've had my '85 FJ60 for 3 years, no problems, a few replaced parts, new tires, regular maint. and I'm planning on driving it from the Florida Keys to Michigan next month. I know nothing about fixing it. Should I be worried? I've read all of VT's checklists and I can have my mechanic follow it but what would any of you say the realistic chances of me breaking down are? Am I crazy to think I can make it 1,700 mi. without a problem? I can get duct tape. |

| You need to add some ass wipes to you kit. Also need them fancy plastic disposable gloves, tire pressure gauge. Ship misc. parts down there via DHL if you got them. You will be surprise how cheap it really is. flashight would be nice. The LED type will be even better. If you have an igniter handy bring it. I have an alternater I can drop ship you if you need one. Good luck.
Only put gas in well lit areas. |

i, on the other hand, have never even laid eyes on this thing.... |

| Did they tell you how bad the oil leak is? I am not far from highway 5 & 99 (about 30-45 mins) if you need a garage and tools after 4 hours of driving.
Sounds like a fun trip. The tires look bigger than 235's. That will help out on the highway. What size tires are they?

| You might want to publish your route. That way we are aware of where you are if you have problems and can help. Isn't there a land cruiser travelers emergency contact list somewhere?
