Forgive me for I am not an expert. Also only 16 :D
I just read at least 5 threads about desmog. And for the life of me I tried to figure it out. With all the parts and drawings and different pictures and misunderstandings, I can't get it straight. I know I have the pump still in place, and my dad said that a long time ago (before the car was mine) our mechanic completely gutted the pump. So to my knowledge it is just spinning nothing. And everything else is still in place. Is it hurting the engine to be running like that?
What I want to do about it is a full de-smog.
I have read about the options to replace where the pump is; Jim C. makes or made one. And Specter sells one for $200
What else needs to be done?
I am just thinking all of this info scattered about in the many archives of threads should be in one place, so everyone can get their questions answered. One more thing, Any pictures you need to see that may aid you, I can take.

Thanks guys

Alex

there is a current thread on this I have seen. Seems like threads are always started about the same things huh? D'oh

You are right about all the "fugitive" information. However, people have different ideas on what should be done. Another factor is that it really is not totally legal to assist someone in removing emissions stuff (I suspect at least). I would bet that publishing the information that you are looking for would be skating on the thin ice of environmental regulation. That said, your first step is to get a hold of the emissions manual. Not all the little hoses are part of the real de-smog stuff. For example, if you have air conditioning, you want to keep the AC idle up; that's not an emissions thing. Also, you want to keep the stuff that works to help your motor warm up quicker ( the stuff on the air cleaner). And, you want to keep the hoses that draw air through the distributor to keep it nice and dry.

I have desmogged two rigs now and have been well-satisfied with the outcome. Both times, I have had Jim Chenoweth rework the carburetors for a desmogged engine. One one, he recurved the distributor as well. Jim sells a good idler to replace the smog pump; his price is $100. Nice, simple thing that takes up minimal space.

I removed the EGR system, HAC, all the stuff that regulates the air pump, the air rail. I kept the stuff that deals with the charcoal cannister and the air conditioner. Also, the stuff dealing with the engine warm up.

Again, get the emissions manual before you start working on it or even asking questions.

thanks heartworm!

D'animal part of my pump is already gone. also my rig does not run good. Far from it. I have also read that a desmog and removal of the cat gives a great increase in power. Especially with a full exhaust; heads to the tip.

Get a Smog pulley set up to run. It replaces your smog pump with a simple pulley.

Who ever told you that you get a great increase in power is full of crap!

Then what about all of the other stuff. Isn't it useless then? I may as well pull it out
I read it somewhere...

the desmogg does help along with the exaust mods but dont expect alot of gain. yea a few but nothing to brag over, the real gain is less parts, easy acess to the motor:D jim c has a excellent write -up in the tec section if ya want to go look

Like the guys say, there won't be a tremendous boost in horsepower with a de-smog. However, I believe that it will run better because you are eliminating a lot of variables. Collectively, most of the emissions stuff on your rig is as old as the rig. Another words, you have a lot of plastic valves, rubber hoses, rusted out metal pipes, etc that are 20 years old. One cannot expect that stuff to last forever so the choice is either to replace/fix or remove. Some advice, don't get rid of the CAT. I replaced mine with a piece of straight pipe. Now, it sounds like a little Cessna on the highway. Going to put a flow-through CAT back on just for the muffler effect.

If the air pump is gutted and still spinning, don't worry about it.
Take care of the problems that are making the engine run bad, before it burns valves or blows a HG.

Thanks Jim. I think I should get my Carbeurator rebuilt, at 166 thousand what do ya'll think? Pretty sure it has never been worked on.

The miles are not as much of a concern as the the time. The rubber and leather bits have been living on top of the hot engine for 20-some years now.

Resistance movement!

Don't desmog! In today's world that's stupid. Spend the money and fix your rig right. Period.

Guys, stop the red neck aspect of this forum. We should be pushing correct fixes, not the cheapest crap. If you can't afford a real fix then sell your Daddy's truck (or however you got it).

As THE FJ60 forum, don't you guys think we should expouse proper info, not mythical desmog crap.

I start here. Don't desmog and **** up your truck. Sell it and leave it alone!
