H42 to H55F upgrade, t-case question

I drive a 1981 HJ60 (Aussie), with the H42, ~220K miles. Bad rear main seal, probably oil-soaked clutch, and a worn synchro on 3rd. Time for a new tranny...
Cruiserparts.net has the H55F (new in the crate) for $1850. With the seals, gaskets, clutch kit, driveshaft set and shifter set, it comes to ~$2400.
But, I am being told that I may need a new transfer case shifter and possibly a new (or rebuilt) t-case. Something to do with the oiler nipple. I've read a little on the subject but just don't understand. How could some of the t-cases have an oiler nipple and some not? If so, is it year specific? Other than pulling the t-case and looking for it, is there some other way to tell if I need to spend MORE money on a replacement t-case?

Help!

Great idea and we went through the same..........Best mod we have done was to put the 5 speed in the FJ60..........ours is an 85 and believe you need a split TC that did not come out till middle of 1985, hope some more knowlegable members can shed some light on this;

you can modify you splitcase to work with the h-55 the "oiler" oils the 5th gear in the transmission.. therefore you must make the modification, as for the shifter ... the only differance is in length you can fix that too or just get the linkage from a 5 speed

The oiler is a small plastic piece you insert into the tcase. My 86 had a slot inside the tcase cover for it to fit into, but I'm not sure if the earlier models had that. Cruiser Parts will also be able to answer any questions you might have if you cant find the answer here. I know you'll need to mod the driveshafts since the pre 85 60s didn't have a 4inch spacer behind the tranny. I'm not sure about the tcase linkage mods, but there are plenty of mudders here that willl fill you in.
