Carb 'Secondary' : Failure Symptoms ?

If the 'secondary' is not functioning, what would be the symptom ?

A few weeks ago, I senta post about seeming to have less 'power' when outside air is hot, but lots of get up & go when air is cold.

Seem to have fair 'green light' get up & go when hot outside, but real zoom-zoom ( well as best as a 60 could ever zoom) at o'dark thirty in the morn (or late at night)

Yesterday, 3.5 hour turnpike drive....every now & then, I'd find that I've slowed down (ever so subtley) to about 2500 rpm (64 mph) and gas pedel floored !

I could ease up on the pedel a bunch (maybe 1/2 inch tween pedel and 'stop' behind it and loose no speed at all....no matter what I did, couldn't get over 'about' 2500 rpm....
real pisser is an over pass,,,,looseing speed going up...with gas floored....
....of course got it back going down hill...only to have it dwindle on the long level straights....

down the road, approach a cloudy, rainey, cooler area,,,,,could....over the course of a few miles, get back to about 3000 rmp (71,72 mph).

and, as best as I could tell, no knockling or pinging under 'loosing speed, floored, ' etc conditions....

Engine 'unloaded' will rev well past 3000....just the under load performance sucks

Well, thanks for any suggestions...oh, this is a 442,xxx miles orig carb....

in 3rd gear doing about 40-45mph, floor it......you should feel the "HUGE"(LOL) surge of power when then secondary kicks in

Mine used to lose power on long drives, too (same symptoms), but not since I cleaned the carbs, so you might be on to something. There are a couple of threads about it, but I'm not sure what you should search.

With the engine off, put a paper clip on the secondary actuator rod so that it is touching the vacuum housing case. Take it for a spin and put your foot in it several times. Park it and check out the paper clip: If it has moved down the rod a half inch, the secondary is opening.

The Great Guru Of Carb has spoken, and I'm a believer...

So, I beg of thee, what is the (hopefully) simple repair ?

( If I can grab a spare, one will come your way for your magic touch)

Thanks

Bwaaahaah! Perhaps a little generous in your estimate there?

Totally concur with Jim on that call.

You're in good hands.

Best

Soggy, the fix (at minimum ) is a new diaphragm that is not cracked & rotten.

Cerainly w/ that mileage a whole carb rebuild & tweaking would also be justified.

Or maybe an entire engine rebuild.

and a tranny & t-case overhaul

And front axle rebuild

and new frammis modulator...

Where do you stop fixing on a vehicle w/ that kinda miles?

I agree; it's my DD so I need to find a spare carb B4 I send ya mine

> Or maybe an entire engine rebuild.

or switch to a Toyota desiel

> and a tranny & t-case overhaul

got the parts for xfer overhaul; waiting for tranny to take a dump so I can 'justify' getting an H55

> And front axle rebuild

Been There, Done That; swapped diffs to 4.11s (w/ ARBs....both), too....

> and new frammis modulator...

Before or after the muffler bearings ? ;-)

oh,, BTW, the 'ring' clamp ex pipe to bracket from tranny; bout every year, I have to 'reset' it, it walks off trany bracket( yes, I know about alignment of ring & lip on bracket...)

> Where do you stop fixing ....

Never....

> on a vehicle w/ that kinda miles?

Not all of the mile have been kind; banged trees, stuck in mud, bounced off logs, not yet been to GSMTR....

I'll get one of those diaphrams;

nudda question: The 'bolts' on carb; look like bowl drains (or access to jets)

OK to unsrew / drain bowl / blast (sorta blast) with carb cleaner / screw back on / be happy-don't worry ?

Yes, the carb can be flushed out by removing the 14mm bowl plugs and then hosing Gumout(tm) in the vent tubes on top & in the drain holes. Not a bad PM idea.
