PTO?

Does hardware and parts exist for a PTO on a 60? I see it referenced in the factory manual, but is it even feasable to retrofit one?

Aside from the coolness factor of having an OEM setup, is it worth the effort over a typical electric winch?

Not for most people and most uses.

Some times your vehicle cannot be running when you need to winch. Meaning your engine may have died during a water crossing or your vehicle is on it's side or upside down.

IMO, A PTO winch on a 60 would rank pretty high on the cool factor.

I have been looking at doing one for a while, from what I have heard is that not all the transfer cases in the 60 have the gear needed to drive the PTO. You can get the gear and slip it on once you open the case. Then you need all the goodies, cut a hole in your floor for the shifter, etc.
As for pro/cons IMHO, if your engine is dead the likely hood of winching for the extra 100 or so feet until your battery dies is small. If it's on the side or upside down, winching yourself is not likely going to do a lot of good. Another vehicle winching you from the side is more beneficial. I've been in water crossings before without a winch and stuck, the engine was still running but if it wasn't I could see the benefit of winching on just the battery. Also the other thing to remember is in a water crossing there is always the chance that your electric winch can die due to the water as well. PTO winches are strong but they take away ground clearance as they hang out a fair bit. A combo of PTO up front and electric in the back would be awesome. It boils down to what you want and what you want it for. Personally I will be getting one.

I have done this, a bit of work, but not that difficult.

There are some pic's here: http://nlck.no/forum/viewtopic.php?t...r=asc&start=40 and a description (in norwegian)

The work on the 60 can be found on page 3 onwards, and a split t-case with and newly mounted PTO-drivegear is on page 1 (from a 70, but same thing)

I've got one on my Canadian spec. BJ60. You can see it in the avitar. It takes a little massaging of the tranny hump to make it fit but it is certainly doable.

btw My transfer (from an '84 H55) had the PTO drive gear.
