Minimum air intake hose diameter?

Guys to supplement my budget cruiser build up.....I am wanting to eventually put in a snorkel. But a prefabbed snorkel will break my budget in itself. So I was thinking if I could fab a snorkel, like a few people on the board have I could save money. Then I would either have to Mod the intake on top of the motor to put the intake on the left, figure out how to fit the snorkel on the right, or put the snorkel on the left and the intake on the right and run a hose.

I have a plan......share it with everyone later.......but what is the minimum diameter I could use on the hose between the intake and the snorkel?
