MrZero divorces 2F for Vortec mistress....

Well, I've fully committed to a 5.3L Vortec conversion. I'm not a 2f purist by any stretch and I certainly don't believe that that engine is what makes a Cruiser a Cruiser.

In my case, I now need to pass emissions, something that was proving to be very difficult to do on my truck. I also have a 9 month old son that I'd like to put in the Cruiser, but reliability is an issue with the wife. I love DD my rig, but in Austin traffic and my commute specifically, the 2f was not cutting it in performance or mpg.

So, after much number crunching and soul-searching, I decided to go for a conversion. I couldn't find anybody in my area that does these, and I was contacted by our very own iaintscared1969 saying that if I could get it to Irving, he'd take on my project. So.....long story short, the rig's up there as of this weekend, There's a 5.3L Vortec from a 2002 Tahoe, AA headers, Downey stuff, and a new H55 waiting to go in, and I'm damn excited! This is a project I would never have time to do myself, nor do I have the know-how. So keep an eye on this thread as the build progresses!

I would be curious to know how this project turned out and how much it cost you to have him install all of this.

Also did you supply the motor and parts or did he find all the parts needed for this conversion. I live in Houston, Texas and in the future would love to do this conversion and want as much info. as possible.

Thanks James

You'll love it - it'll have plenty of power down there!

Ever notice how Austin, Texas sounds like ostentatious?

Harlot!

Actually the newest GM pushrod engines have some of the best BSFC numbers of any 2 valve dinosaur engine, ever. Should provide a small increase in fuel economy and a humongous increase in HP (HarlotPower).

Harness and ECU programming

This truck will use a Fuel Injection specialties harness and programming. They are out of San Antonio. Running Emmisioins and Cats for compliance with A/C and additional electrical fan connections in the event it would require one in the future. Staying with a stock radiator and running the h55 and transfer with the Downey VSS adapter.

Other side header and mount

P.S header and engine mount. This one had a broken exhaust bolt. Get it out now or forever hold my peace.

Thanks for the heads up on the adapter. And the Texas ref's aren't as anal as Ca. I think the Blue thing is a sign? I may need to do a 40 to break the streak. I'll burn for saying that.

Tonight Bell housing and clutch

Tonight I will get the bell housing and clutch together. Get it ready to mate a 5 speed to it.

Which VSS adapter are you guys using? I looked at the web site (downey) the other day and noticed that they apparently now have a few different options. In my case I'll use the Yota manual trans mated with the GM V-8 (99 Vortec 5.7).

I'll post up a thread on what I've done...but is not much at this point.... swapped out old gaskets for new and have the engine on a stand. I have some pics, but its obvious I need a little practive with the "ole digital camera"...

You should be getting a 40 tooth reluctor ring PN# 33130-F? depending on you transfer case. Then you will also need the sensor.

Yes, it runs well. I'll be posting up in the classifieds probably tomorrow. Smog pump will probably go separately since it's OEM and was purchased and installed brand new only a couple years ago.....

Awesome Project. If You Have Some Extra Money When The Project Is Done, Look Into A Magnus Supercharger. I Have Installed Them On 6.0's And 5.3's And 1 4.8. Holy Cow. You Want Some Bottom End Torque That Is Extremely Driveable This Is The Best Supercharger On The Market For A Vortec Motor. Magnus Will Actually Give You A 3 Year 36k Warranty On The Motor For And Extra $300. About 6k Installed. 4100 For Kit.n Just A Suggestion.

Needs hose wraps now

Now all you need is a dress up kit in stainless and blue for the hoses. Gotta make it match.
