HJ60 top speed?

I have about 330,000 kilomters (205,000 MILES) on this 1981 HJ60, with the original 4-speed gearbox. It sits on 31" (10.5 R15) Winston Winners (I got them for almost free).

On a level stretch of road traveling at ~3750 rpms I am going about 139 kph (86 mph). Going down a -10% grade, I once got it to 145 kph (90 mph), but I don't recall the rpms. At 3500 rpms, I travel smoothly at 133-135 kph (82-83 mph). At 3000 rpms, I am going 108 kph (67 mph).

Anyone got numbers to compare this to?

One time I got it past 55 mph but that was when I used to live on the edge...

Waggoner, where the hell did you get that HJ? I just looked at every picture of it in your photo site, it looks like it came from a dealer a week ago.

So what were your EGT numbers? How hot did it get to do this speed run?

I';m with ya there!

For kicks and giggles, I took the LC (89 fj62) for a full out run on a barren stretch of interstate right after I got her.

I hit a whopping top speed of just over 90mph!

I've taken many vehicles over the century mark on many occasions (work related). This was by far the least "fun" I've ever had. It took forever to get there, was a little skittish (handeling) and very very loud!

My convertible doesn't sound this loud...with the top down

I think the rpm was around 3500 as well, but I'm not sure?

This was with an automatic and stock wheels/tires.

Similar results. In my 81 HJ's better days it would max at 130KPH on flat land with it floored for at least 5 min. Long stretch of road floored for 15 min it would creep up to 135KPH.
Poor thing now would probably shake apart at 100KPH

My temp doesn't climb up too high unless I have it running over 3500 rpms for a few minutes. It has never gotten past half way on the thermometer. I have NO idea what the actual temp is, but there were no negative symptoms from doing this (repeatedly).

She' a real noisy girl though, especially after I pulled out the carpeting and replaced it with the SOR vinyl diamond plate flooring.

Cruising at 80 is at least as stable feeling as 40 in this truck.

The fastest I've gone in my HJ60 is 70mph, which is with an H55F, 4.11s, and 33 inch tires. That is also about cruising speed, 2400-2600 rpm. I never really rev the engine above 3,000rpm and I never run it above 2500rpm for any length of time.

wow. I was just feeling happy yesterday when I got mine up over 100 for the first time. 100 kph. Felt like I was pushing my luck.

Maybe someday I'll shoot for 120, but might need a tailwind to get there.

When I first bought my 62 I was late for a cruiser club meeting and I think I hit 85mph on some back roads. A few years later I won't dare go over 75. I can usually do 60-65 on the hwy at about 2500-3000 rpms. Anything over that and I'll most likely die from discenagration....but at least i'll go down in a cruiser

I don't give a crap about your coolant temp. Go into the diesel section and read about pyrometers. or pyro.

You can over heat a diesel internally by pushing it too hard. So much so that the head will fail, you could melt the things etc. They can get up to 1600 degrees pretty quick.

I can say your engine will not last long if you treat it that way. Wanna go fast, but a different brick.

I had a HJ60 with a 5 speed.. With the stock tires (when it had the omph to go that fast) I got it over 90 mph a couple of times.. I would generally cruiser at 75-80 with no problems... With 31's and altitude it was harder, powerwise, to get going that fast, but the rpms were lowered and it cruised at that speed just fine.. Eventually adding the turbo helped a lot as well..

x3 Belting crap out of a diesel is like tearing money up. Wanna go fast? Get something designed for it.
For me anything over 3000 is too painful.
