I now officially have something to shoot for: restore my HJ to as close a condition as your BJ-T. I really like your choice of paint colors/textures and your methodical/obsessive dedication to cleanliness and improving the appearance of each individual part. You obviously don't need a frame off, but when you are done, that rig will be pretty close to new condition and with that compressor on that motor, it will perform much better than new.

BTW I keep seeing different FJ62s around town. I am up to about 10 different ones that I can think of. Somewhow we should try to have a local TLC pow-wow. Other than going through the DMV, I wonder how we might reach all the local TLC owners.

Also, on my way to High Springs I saw an FJ40 for sale on the North side of 441. Looked pretty badly oxidized.

Kudos Frank!

The 3b motor mounts are welded on the 62 frame. The transmision mounts will

be welded on tomorrow.

The entire frame and mounts will be painted semi gloss rustoluem black.

The axles will be painted semi gloss black when I rebuild the knuckles.

Thanks Ishobie for the 3b ac bracket.

I almost have all the parts needed to add ac and ps to the diesel conversion.

While you are at it, this would be an ideal time to lift the body off of that 62 and paint/rustproof that frame. And if you so desire, life the body an inch or two.

Hey man, I am a few steps ahead of you. Becuase I pretty much did everything you have so far as restoring the 62. I got the new engine mounts and engine dropped in last night.

My only word of advise is to use high gloss. Yes the first week it will be very glossy but it will look like semi-gloss before you know it. I have painted 3 frames, 1 with semi and 2 with gloss. With in about 2 weeks of road use you dont see the gloss. BUt the kicker is...that the semi will let mud and dirt stick to it the high-gloss wont. I am a firm believer that the high gloss protects the frame much better than the semi or for that matter flat paints. I can snap a pic of my gloss painted frame for you if ya want and you will see its not very glossy and wont get stained with mud/dirt.

It has been a busy summer...... i.e. no time to wrench on the crusier.

Frank has done a fine job of welding the transmission and motor mounts.

KUDO's Frank..... 1k Thanks

I left the oem 62 transmission mounts in place.

I wasn't sure if I needed them for a future h55 conversion.

It is really coming along, I can now paint the frame and begin putting everything back together.

Gunnar installed the clutch bucket while I attended my Grand dads funeral.

He also hooked up the clutch master.

Thanks dude!

While the dash is out, the bj60 gauges are being installed in the 62 cluster.

I will be cutting of pieces off the 62 harness not used in the conversion.

Great thread! I would like to do the same conversion eventually, already have the BJ60. You've answered my question about the manual tranny mounts on a 62 frame, and I already have the right ones on my truck.

Now I just need a clean 62 with a bad motor or trans and a shop to work in.

Thanks again for the great pics and keep up the good work!!

I just installed the clutch bucket on my rig as well. Fun job.

Hey brudda...Will you mark the front 4.11 when you take it out. I would really like to install the front R&P in the rear since they normally only have a few thousand miles on them.

Ill do the same for you. The front R&P on my rig should only have about 100 miles on it

Hope to see you at bryans this weekend.

-Al

I started painting the frame today.

Because of other obligations, I didn't get as much done as I would have liked.

No need for $pensive frame coatings, oil based Rustoleum works very very well.

I hope to finish the job in the morning.

FSM Hooray!

I scored this beauty today.

It covers 1980 1981 fj bj and hj models both 40 and 60 series.

The book was printed Aug 80.

I have to break this book in,

the pages don't have any grease prints yet.

Chapters Include:

Intro
Clutch
Transmission
Propeller Shaft
Front Axle and Suspension
Rear Axle and Suspension
Steering
Brake
Front Winch
Frame
Body
Body Electrical
SST
Service Specs

A FSM is a must have. All the answers are in this book. I consider it the Bible for my truck.

This one will be getting alot of use.

I have a few other earlier FSMs to keep this one company on the bookshelf. (including the 3b fsm)

I refer to these manuals when folks ask if I've read any good books lately.

Looks like a great project. I just picked up a F62 and plan on doing the same thing you are doing with my rusty BJ60.

Are you putting the round lights on your FJ62?
How much for the turbo for the 3B?

Here are the cruisers:

warrior737- Sweet rigs!

I am keeping the square lights.

http://forum.ih8mud.com/diesel-tech-24-volts-systems/131284-3b-diy-turbo-question.html

My bud Richard pulled the turbo from his 85 300d Mercedes.

I paid him $100 for the huffer.

An adapter or turbonetics conversion turbine housing is also required to put the Garrett on the 13bt manifold.

http://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.p...=13b-t+garrett see post #6

Thanks BrownBear for the info/photos.

The turbonetics housing requires a custom wastegate, so I probably won't go this route.

I am not sure of the cost the conversion housing vs the adapter.

Saweeeet. There is these fine foam rollers that I found at Ace that are yellow and about 2.5 inches wide. You can get the paint on thick enough that the roll marks go away and it looks like its been powder coated.

Awesome job man. Hopefully we can park our Fj62s together someday...

I have that version of manual too. Much better as it shows real pictures not drawings. I also have a 1984 version which is all drawings. But I prefer to look at the older one.

The adapter is the cheapest option. 70 bucks or so, then you can run any T3 garrett. The housing would be nicer than an adapter, but $$

Add a little mineral spirits and it does the same. Roll it on and it self levels.

But don't use too much or it will not be thick enough...

The bj gauges were used in the 62 dash.

The 62's gauge face was retained with the bj gauges behind it.

All the sending units from the bj will be swapped.

The bj 4k tach was swapped over.

The 62 speedometer was retained.

Bottom picture shows the left over parts. (note km speedo and 62 tach)

The yellow circled warning lights will be installed into the 62.
