| Interior air vent for Newbie owning '89 FJ62 I'm new to IH8MUD, so please be easy on me with this first question...The '89 FJ recently purchased has a broken passenger side air vent "director". I purchased a used/refurbished vent control on-line; however, there are no installation directions [and no information I could easily find on-line].
Before I start dismantleing the dash, is there a simple way to pop-out/replace the plastic vent? Is there access through removing the glove box?
Thanks for your help! |

| Vent Problem Hello,
I dont have the answer to your question but the best investment that you should make ASAP is on The Original Toyota Repair Manual. The book costs $50+ but the diagrams, pics, and instructions are supurb. This is the book that they give to the Toyota Technicians. I have seen these manuals on Ebay. Take care and good luck.

| Welcome to Mud GreyGoose!
You do have to pull the front of the dash since the vent goes in from the back. Just carefullty remove screws and panels. The trim around the heat controls should come off first as I recall. Just make sure you don't put too much pressure on anything and break it. When it comes to the instrument panel the speedo cable has to be released.
It's really quite easy, just take your time and don't use force.

| Landpimp is faster than me but things will break. Specifically the tab that "locks" the heater/AC piece in place, I know because I cracked mine.
Remove that first and nothing will break unless excessive force is used.

| try pullin it out if it breaks remove the dash to install the new one. if it survives the new one should be fine seeing that it has not been sitting in the sun with heat blowing through it for twenty years

| Final Outcome... Thanks again to everyone's advice. I had ordered the entire vent control including housing, and based on your information, I figured out the inner control popped out of the housing [with some light force]. I then popped the old inner vent control out and the new one in, and did not have to remove the dash. If replacing with entire vent housing, the dash would have to be removed.
...On to the next repair of this '89 rig. -GreyGoose |
