Shadetree High Pinions?

So if the studs match up, why couln't ya swap the front & rear diffs (assuming FF in rear) & flip 'em so you have high pinions? You could raise the oil filler plug so you keep the toothy things wet.

Its keeping the bearings wet that matters. I believe the 80 series front diff has a different method of oiling the bearings to make it work. BTW on 40/60/62s - the front and rear are the same so swapping doesn't do much more than put the low lilage one in the back

Last time I had this bright idea I was just going to turn the axle housings end-for-end but someone (2badfjs, I think) pointed out I would have 1 speed forward & 4 in reverse. So I thought if the front & rear diffs have the ring on opposite sides you could swap 'em & turn 'em upside down. I think I could put enough oil in to keep the bearings wet.

Dammit, 60, you're ruining my fun!

fronts and back are the same. if you swap them and flip them you will still go backwards! Only way to go high pinion is to get a diff set-up for it.

i was trying to get the offset of the rear axle to sit on the driverside instead of the pass side.
this was when i was thinking about putting a chevy sm465 and a np205 in the 60.
that mod i know can be done but you would have to notch the housing for the ring gear.
i gave up on that and just picked up a bell housing to keep the toyota trans and t-case.

glass biz slow steve?
i'm off next week, i may stop by to say hey.
