bearing question
hey fellas,
my pops-in-law & i are redoo-ing a bunch of things to my rig. we've had the carb and head rebuilt. i've got the side panel off to replace the gasket (it was leaking like a faucet). the pistons were taken out & we honed the cylinders today. since we're down there already, i'm wondering about how worn the main bearings might be. the bearings attached directly to the pistons didn't seem too bad. i'm gonna replace them anyway since i bought the kit. but i understand that getting to the main bearings is gonna entail dropping the tranny. i kinda don't wanna go this far into it b/c i hear putting the tranny back is hairy. if the piston bearings didn't look too bad, i can assume the main bearings are in good condition too, right? any suggestions? thx.

When you say piston bearings are you talking about the bearings on the little end of the rod? How did the bearings on the big end look? Im assuming you dropped the pan to get the pistons out (i dont know how you wouldnt), cant you just let the crank down enough to get new bearings in? You might as well if you have them.

There are no bearing on the piston end of the rods. Just the crank shaft end. Rod bearings, not piston bearings.
A used piston is really not the way to go. Buy a new one.
Where is the piston cracked? The skirt I assume?
The main bearings in the 3FE when installed in the FJ62 can not be replaced without removing the tranny. Because you can not access the #4 main bearing cap with the tranny attached.
Mark...

in awe...
mark, you are the man!! thanks for getting my parts str8.
so the rod bearings looked pretty good. i can replace those easily. my question is whether i should assume the main bearings are pretty good too. prolly the same situation applies to a 2f as it does with the 3fe, huh. tranny gotta drop.
yes, the piston skirt is cracked btw.
