New Fuel Pump Gone Bad

Hey everyone,

I'm new to this forum so i thought i'd jump right in. I just experienced being stranded yesterday and for the first time needed to be towed. I stopped to get something to drink, got back in the cruiser and no deal!
I got home and tested for fuel pump operation ( per fsm) and it doesn't seem to working. I just replaced the fuel pump last year with a Denso unit. I noticed gas leaking steady from a seam in the gas tank and have found out that the fuel tank recall has not been done to my vehicle. I plan to have this done.
My question: Could the gas tank problem be the culprit for the new fuel pump burning out? I'd appreciate any input.

Thanks Guys,

Jason

I would think that if the fuel return were clogged or not functioning, such that the tank could not vent, it would build enough pressure in the system and ruin the diaphragm in the fuel pump. This is just a theory, others will verify. Curious, did you use the correct spacer when you installed the pump?

Thanks for the input. The fuel pump install was done by a shop,
(made in Japan). I'm not sure about the spacer

Without the spacer, the pump will get trashed.

Ok, so what is the spacer for? I am having fuel pump problems also... Mine died, I got a used one, and tossed it on. It made it one day and it died. Pulled it off, just now and the arm was trashed.

I didnt use a spacer, because there wasnt one on the original unit I took off... and the two pumps were exactly alike.

I bought a new one from Crusier Dan and the spacer, but I am now confused at what the spacer is for if my original pump didnt have one and all three look exactly alike with the same length of arm.

I looked at my 2F repair manual and it shows the spacer but doesnt talk about it....

The spacer gives you the specified clearance between the fuel pump rocker arm and the cam lobe.

It was probably left off somewhere up the line until you caught it.

They tend to stick to the pump case, if you do not look carefully they are easy to miss.

On a side note, overtightening the fuel pump bolts can crack the spacer which may result in a mysterious high-speed (>60mph), fine-mist oil leak.
