Thumbs up How's your stick shift ?(no pun intended)

Hey All,

I'm running a 3F in my 85 FJ62, with the original Gear box (don't know the designation), its a manual 4 speed. How is the thing shifting with you guys, is it really smooth like the 4 runners, or like mine which is a bitch to shift , especially 1st to 2nd. Can i use any sort of special lubricant , maybe synth, to alleviate ?

Mine shifts pretty rough.('84 FJ-60) She hates the cold especially! I can double clutch it and it takes just as long to shift, but it does into gear easier. I haven't done it yet but I have had buddies switch to Mobil 1 tranny fluid and it made a difference in there trucks.

I just finished swapping a 4 spd into my 89 fj62 today. The tranny shifts smooooooooooooth. Maybe you need to replace the plastic bushing and pin that holds your shifter in place...pretty easy to get to right on the truck.

If it's cold 1st-2nd sometimes seems impossible. My old 4spd and new 5spd are/were both that way. If the tranny is warmed up, everything is smooth IF you shift at it's pace and not try to speed shift, then it's a little rough.

I have a 3B in in my BJ60, and it shifts rough, especially when it is cold. I had a tranny flush done late last week and it made a huge difference. But, it is still not as smooth as my 4runner.

A good double clutch seems to help, and shifting into 2nd quickly, just use first to get the rig rolling

Mine's fine (about 130K mi). Might try synthetic (Amsoil always worked for me - get the proper weight), & then BG manual tranny additive. If that doesn't work, you probably need your trans rebuilt. You can get good used ones for under $100. I have one with about 250K mi if you're interested.

When it's cold, it takes some finesse to get it into second. Once it warms up, it's no problem. I have an 85 60 with a 4 spd.

Mine is like Butter. With the cold weather here in TX at 25 - 32 shes fine. Also when I picked up in Montana it shifted like new. No double clutching just 1 - 4.

have you replaced the little bushing at the bottom of the shifter? mine actually locked in reverse once. replaced that little bushing and it's been beautiful ever since.

A bad clutch could also make it hard to shift so look into that.......if it shifts a lot easier when NOT running but hard when running then I would go toward the clutch............

Hi everybody!

Well, a simple thing, as advised change teh the spherical bushing on the botom of the stick, and in cold weather, let the truck warm up in first with the transfer case in neutral, that warm up the gearbox and transfer oil.

Ok, based on ths thread, I'm planning some work over the weekend. Will start by checking the bushing, but where can I reach it from?, the cabin or from beneath ?, also what weight Mobil 1 to use, or is it just the one type.
Cheers

The bushing is under the shifter itself. Once you remove the shifter you'll be able to see and remove/replace the bushing.
