So a quick estimate if you were doing a resto for someone for $20 hr. cash would be about $4700 so far for labor.
Interesting. Always wondered what some places charge for major restoration jobs.

I look forward to your picture updates. They give me hope for my job.

$20/hr? HA! Good luck finding any shop willing to work for that! I do quite a few side jobs out of my home shop, and still charge $40/hr.

Body Work

I got 3 hours over the last two nights on the 60. I have been working on the driver side rear corner and rear sill. That rear section is just shot!

Lower rear inside prepped for patch:

Driver side - small rust marks ground out and primered for now:

This stuff sucks. I don't know if I'd do it even for $40/hr for a living - maybe if I had a better work area it'd be better.

you've got to factor in the overhead. even out of someone's home garage/shop there are plenty of expenses-utilities, tools, basic supplies like paper towels, grease and beer.

You can't stop now, but taking a break is always helpful. Just look how far you've already come. I enjoy watching this and seeing your progress because what looks like small stuff takes a decent amount of time and finess to get it to look right. Sounds like it might be time for a new tool to play with

It's not quite a new tool... but I had to get myself some new welding gloves! Much better than the old pair of leather work gloves!

Body Work

Got 1hr 30 min on the 60 last night. I got more work done the body. I finished the driver side rocker panel patch and got all the snake blinders welded shut. I cleaned the undercoat from inside the driver side wheel well to see the damage as well. Only part I am stumped on is the inner fender... not a fun part to make from scratch.

Snake blinder holes before:

Snake blinder holes after:

Driver side rear quarter. What's left to fab up on the outside and the ugly inner wheel well:

On the front side, you can see how the inside is rusted out, the outside still looks good:

Driver side inner fender wheel well all cleaned up for welding:

Project60, How much of the inner fender are you replacing? Just the portion that contains the outer brace?

I'm in the same situation, but I think I'm going to try my hand at building a hammer form to replicate the inner well and outer brace. Let me know how much of yours you will be reproducing. . . if it's the same as mine you may be in luck.

My biggest issue is from the outer wheel well lip (part visible while looking at the truck) to the first seam in the wheel well. It's not a bad part... but you have two flanges on a contour.

I was thinking of doing it is sections... might not even be as round as it was originally.

Body Work

Got 1hr 20min on the 60 tonight. I finished up the area above the windshield. I kind of cheated on that area - I simply ground out all pinholes and filled them in with weld... I thought it would be easier than a big patch in an area that is so visible. I also touched up the firewall and made sure there were no holes or rusted through spots - all good, some surface rust.

Then I got to work on the driver side rear fender well. I cut the front half out. It's better than I thought, so I will just patch the rusted spots and weld the section back into place.

Above windshield:

Driver Side inner fender well - to the front:

Section Removed w/ some rusted through spots:

Nice work! If you need some inspiration check out this Norsk Land Cruiser Klubb :: Vis Temaet - Kåre`s HJ60 garasje

("neste" at the bottom means next page)
This guy is restoring a HJ60 to "way better than when it left the assembly-line condition"

This one will last for 50 more years for sure!

Body Work

Got 1hr 30min on the 60 tonight. I patched up the front part of the inner wheel well on the driver side - compound curves suck! I did alright for having a hammer and vice though.

Body Work

Got 1hr 45min on the 60 tonight. I got the outside of the rear driver side fender patched up. I then started to weld in the inner wheel well... what pain! I hate welding upside down . it will take a little more to finish up.

I did have a fun moment . The zippers on my coveralls is broken... and a weld bead dropped down through my coveralls burned through my clothes and ran down my leg and into my shoe. That was the fastest I ever got my shoe off!

Outside of driver side fender patched up:

Inner wheel well painted before install:

Weld Burn

I had to throw a picture of the weld burn a day later... The splatter burned through 2 sets of clothes and a sock before it did this!
