2F compatibility

I have an 83 FJ60 that I was planning on pulling the 2F and doing a rebuild on. I have found a rebuilt 2F from a 79 FJ40 locally.

If I can get a good deal on the 79 2F, is there any issues or compatability problems?

Should I use just the short block (use my 83 heads), or use the entire thing?

The ad says the originally tranny is included. Was the 79 a 4spd? If so, are parts interchangable with my 83?

Thanks!

I think that the 79 block may or may not have a mounting pad for your power steering. The head should be the same.

I think '79 does have the provision for PS. 99% sure anyway but the 1% can be a deal breaker so be sure to verify this info,

PS mounting pad is finish machined starting in late 1978.

The head casting is not the same. 81-newer heads are closed chamber, casting number 61040. 79-80 heads are open chamber, number 61032 or -36.

The 79 long block will swap in as an assembly, but will be down on power due to the open chamber, low compression configuration.
