| Lockright and icey roads part ?? Last year I started a few threads with my driving impressions of my rear Lockright on my FJ60. I am doing this for people considering putting one in but are afraid of driving it in these type of conditions. You can look at my profile for threads started by me or do a search to find what else I have posted last winter. This is my first one this winter.
For review, my rig is a 1984 60, 4.56 gears, rear Lockright, 33x12.50 BFG Mud T/As that are loosing tread fast (not bald, not good).
Last night we had a great storm that tore the roads up .... Blowing, drifting snow, and they glazed over with ice really fast after the plows went through. This is some of the worst roads I have seen here in YEARS...
If I would really drive HARD, and I mean HARD, yeah I can get the thing to be out of control. The back end will come around fast. In two wheel drive its very easy to get under control, just steer into it and it comes around. 4wheel drive is that much easier.
Tonight the roads were really bad. So I drove very conservatively... no goofing off. What I noticed is, no matter how slick the intersection was, the 60 always came away from a stop with NO problems at all. And I never felt like the back wanted to pass the front, even while turning corners, or curves at the bottom of bridges. Even turning hard left or right coming from a stop was no problems and I really feel the locker make the rig way more predictible in these conditions than an open rear...
Just my observations....
