leaking fuel just above the tank, any suggestions before......

I take down the tank? I got fuel leaking out off the top of my gas tank and it looks like a broken fuel line feeding the engine because it only leaks when the engine is on. The lines looks pretty corroded from the lines that I could see, I just hope it doesen't involve the fuel pump. I was wondering what other things I should check for and/or change while I got the tank off. I also heard of people cutting access panels on the floor board and thinking about that seeing that it could be a challenge removing 18 year old bolts from a rusty midwestern truck. I am now spraying PB Blaster on the bolts and driving the 80 while the Blaster does some work. Thanks for your suggestions.
BTW, it's my 88 fj62

there's a pickup unit that bolts to the top of the tank. it has two lines a supply and a return.
mine had the same problem. the tank needs to come down to replace it.
you would be suprised. i'm pretty sure the strap bolts are tapped into blind holes.
when i dropped my tank the hardest part was getting the 20 year old rubber gas fill hose off. the spare tire carrier was'nt even that difficult to get off, of course i did'nt put it back on either though.

Thanks for the reply brian! What is a pickup unit? Is it the same as a fuel pump? How much was your pickup unit and where did you get it?
Are the strap bolts you are talking about are the ones holding up the gas tank? It looks like it is on hinges.

I agree with Brain and I just had the same problem... however I used Water Weld and had Mary reach her smaller hands up there and apply it to both hoses... no leaks so far.

But, I don't know where the fuel pump is on the 62s so this may be part of your fuel pump and expensive. Have fun pulling the tank.

Chris

it's just the part that ''picks up '' the gas, and is a removable ''unit'', there's no electric, atleast on a 60.

ordered mine from cruiserparts.net. i forget the cost, i actually ordered a used part and they sent me a nib toyota part.

Not to hijack a thread, but I did not want to start a new one as it is kind of related.

I have noticed a heavy gas smell in the cabin (88' FJ62) , the first time driving after a fill up. It has happened twice, but always is gone by the time I get in again and does not return again, until fill up time. I have seen no gas leaking, but once I opened the gas cap and it seemed to burp a cup of gas back down the tank throat.

Overfilling or do I have a flow problem.

pull the rear most right side panel in the back and take a look at the separator. it sounds like something is not letting the tank vent correctly.

Unlike a '60, on a '62 the electric fuel pump is in the tank.
