| 3FE + H42 in a 62...anyone done it? Hey all,
Just wondering if anyone has done a H42 4spd swap in a 62? I know some of you have done H55 swaps which would of course be great, but much more expensive. I was originally planning a diesel swap for this truck but I happened along a good deal on an 87 FJ60 parts truck w/ a solid H42 as well as a 4.7 ToyBox so here is my new plan for a cheap(er) wheelable hard-core 62:
Keep the 3FE of course
H42
ToyBox
4.11's or 4.56's w/ lockers
SOA
36 or 37" tyres
My thought was that with taller gearing in the diffs and big tyres, I won't need the 5th gear on the hiway. I'm not all that concerned about hiway performance anyway as this rig will be for local hard-core trails so I won't be driving anymore than a couple of hours away.
So does anyone with experience see any flaws in this plan? This should'nt be any harder than an H55 swap...No? Let me know if I'm missing something here.
Thx

| Swapping in a H42 would be the same as going with a H55F, and since you have a later model FJ60 parts rig you're set. Just swap over the clutch and brake pedals, tranny hump, clutch master, slave and lines, bellhousing (which is a 3F BH), driveshafts, clutch, tranny, and crossmember. You'll have to move the mounts for the crossmember. And you'll have to rewire the neutral start switch and backup light switch. The 62 already has 4.11's so you'll want lower gears if you're going with larger tires.

| Well this project may be stopped before it starts. I just got off the phone with the SMOG ref (CA smog nazi's) who tells me that if your particular year of vehicle never came with a manual trans as an option (ie 88 & 89 Cruisers), that you can't put a manual behind it or it will be tagged next time you smog it. Fawk I hate these bastids!! Any Cali types out there know of a way around this? He said the only way is to apply for smog exemption via a diesel swap.

| Technically true, but how would they know? The motor is stock configuration with no mods. On the dyno, no difference. If it could pass with an auto, it can pass with a manual.

They don't care what comes out of the tailpipe if something doesn't match what the computer tells them then you are screwed....
How wrecked is the parts truck? could you swap the 3FE into it?

| | The funny thing is, the parts truck has a cleaner, straighter body than my 62...the interior is trashed though. Plus, swapping all the electronics for the 3FE into the 60 is WAY more work than I want to get into...this is supposed to be a low budget build.
So I guess I see what my smog buddy says and go from there...

| Damn Brett...
good luck with that!
Fortunately, My rig is registered in Carson City where they have no smog regs!
DO like everyone else in California has...Move to Nevada ...Then youll also be able to carry a gun here
BTW, if you need any help on the weekend with any of that work on the rig...Id be more than happy to come down...Plus, it would be great for me to learn as well....that is, if it goes through!

It is not that hard especially if you have the parts FJ-62.

| So I paid a visit to my friend at the smog shop today. He said the smog ref is a moron and that while technically right, there are very few smog shops that could give a rats ass what tranny you have, no matter what the computer says. So with that, I want to continue pursuing this build. I think I have enough info and reassurance that this will work and be a nice combo. I can't start work on it till Luke at Labs can clear some shop space for me. I'll start a build thread once I get going....Thx all

| First 62 I have ever driven had a H42 swapped in. It was awesome, gobs more power than the auto version and gobs more power than a FJ60. I think it would be an awesome swap. Of course I'd do the 5 speed over the 4 but it would still kick ass regardless. Just leave at 4.10 with those tires then you have highway speed. You will lose some power of course but with the toybox best of both worlds. But if it were me, I'd skip the toybox and go with the H55F, that 4.88 first is nice

I agree...the H55 would be the shit and if I were willing to throw more money at this thing then I'd splurge on an H55...but I basically have a free H42 and a smokin deal on an H42 ToyBox so sticking with the 4spd is a no-brainer for this project. According to the TLCA RPM tables, 4.11's w/ 37's will give me about 2,802 RPM @ 75 MPH. 4.88's w/ 37's will be 3,327 @ 75 MPH. The "define gearing yourself" option isn't working right now so I can't figure exactly what 4.56's would do for me but safe to say it'd be somewhere in the middle @ about 3,000 PRM which would prolly be just about right...plus if I go 4.56's I can pull the ARB 3rd out of the front of my 70 and use it.

| Very cool. While you're in there, you should swap in the 2F block and round headlights with all that cool FJ62 stuff.
