Could you put this mod in the 80 series. I bet some over there would love a product like this one.

Kevin,

Quick question: Looking at the pictures of the tailgate; what is the material used for the door? In previous posts you mentioned plywood. The pictured tailgate looks like a different material. Also, is the door strong enough to stand on without bowing? I often stand on my tailgate to reach items on the roof rack.

Thanks.

The door panel is plywood in all cases. The panel on the tailgate has been coated with undercoating. After testing the varnished natural ply I found that it just would not hold up to the abuse that the tailgate sees.
I tried varnished ply on the 1/4s and I like the way that it looks, but I am finding that it too shows the abuse and dirt too easily. I think that the best approach will be to undercoat in both cases.

Earlier in the thread we talked about strength issues and I mentioned that the frame and panel are stronger than OE, and that my test for them is dropping my spare tire on them. I can jump off the roof onto the tailgate with no issues

Several people have asked me about this, and at first glance I think the setup would would quite well in an 80. The dimensions are different, but the basics are there, heck, the 80 has more volume in its tailgate anyway.
If anyone can get me a rusty busty 80 tailgate, I would be more than happy to cut it up and see.

You sticking with just the tailgate storage or are you gonna try and sell the cargo panel storage as well?

I also stand on there a lot, openeing and closing the roof top tent. Thank you for clarifying the strength issue.

Could you please put me on your list as certain buyer? I know it will be a while, but I'll wait...

thank you, best regards,
Jan

Once the first run of tailgates are done I will make a prototype 1/4 set and work out those prices. There has been a lot of interest in them as well so I will certainly see what I can do.

I will say that they will need to be on a much more custom basis though. The amount of interior trim that is retained, rear seat belts, 60 vs 62, are all things that change the profile a bit.

I agree. Maybe a batch build for people wanting 1/4s done a certain way. I know I want holes for speakers in the 62.

What is the weight on the tailgate piece? Shipping greyhound worked well to ship a rear tailgate and 2 doors across country.

Jason and Kevin,
Steve here at your parents - I think that is what FogBlanket is saying - and shipping will have to be a part of the deal, Jason. I'm in though, so my shipping will cost more than yours does. I'll take mine at the Denver addy. Beautiful work, Savant, per usual.

Kevin, would you consider selling the parts as a kit for the more do it yourself inclined?

If he just made the frame, then you could put in the plywood, coat it, and attach piano hinge and latches. It just might be cheaper to find someone close to you to make the frame though, to save on shipping.

Thanks calphi,
Yup, a few people have asked me about kits, and the result of the subsequent conversation has thus far been another normal order. The logistics of a kit just do not work out. A majority of the cost is simply the parts. Most who have asked about kits would have wanted the welding done, which when completed, basically just leaves screwing the laser cut ply into place, a bit of finishing and screwing the latches on, definitely the least of my time.

If someone was looking to do the welding themselves, I would not recommend it since I have the jigs and fixtures to accomplish it easily. I also have a jig to layout and drill the mount holes in the factory location, which needs to be done after it is all welded together. I could leave out the ply wood, but the location of the lid stops and hinge are dependent on lid thickness. Just too many variables in the steps to make a kit very practical.

What is the thinking behind bolting the frame to the tail gate instead of welding it?

I am assuming ease of installation for non welders...

assume I have no idea what I am talking about and if welding it to the gate is a very stupid idea I apologize in advance and don't hold back in kicking dirt in my face....

No, you guessed right, just makes installation easier.
In my case I did not want to weld it in so I could easily remove it (look at how many times it has been changed)
The tailgate would require re painting if it were welded as well.
And I would probably pop the box out if the latch mechanism needed to be serviced, for easy access.

Does the unit rattle at all when bolted on the tailgate? Would a thin foam gasket do any good? Like a thin weather stripping pad?

Nope, no rattles . There is a lot of tension on the frame, every OE tailgate I have seen has a bit of a cave in from abuse, the frame pulls the tailgate back into shape (within reason) so everything is very snug and rigid.

And I do not expect shipping to be terribly expensive. The package will be very low profile and it really does not weigh much, I would guess less than 20lbs.

How much weight can then handle?
I often use my tailgate for access to my roof rack.

Nice looking product!

Stronger than OE, I can jump off my roof onto the tailgate (200lbs)

Yup, anybody wants to swing by when theirs is ready is fine with me, save on shipping and get a hand cutting out the tailgate.

And November? probably not unless a lot of people back out on the sale. Perhaps when I post the list you can get someone to switch with you? I know how it is to have something you want to have done for a trip.
