Does that sound fair to you guys?
I would post the list and other for sale information in a new thread and keep this one for tech stuff.

Sounds like you have thought this through.
It will give me time to save up!!

Will do, and will do, but lets not post orders here. Until I start a for-sale thread feel free to PM me with interest and feel free to ask questions in this thread.
I am still waiting for my laser guy to let me know what he can reproduce the parts for (said he would get back to me today) and I want to cut out a demo tailgate to illustrate the process, then we should have everything for a sale.

Does my post #63 get me a spot in line? I sure hope so...
Can you give us a price range estimate?
Will there be upgrade options, such as making that lid out of something other than ply (like steel, for example)? I'm concerned about the durability when pushing/pulling heavy stuff over the tailgate. Plywood, even coated, will get gouged/scratched up/chipped pretty quickly. I guess I could glue or screw down a piece of diamondplate/machine turned aluminum over the plywood...

Yup, I marked down those who simply expressed their interest even before I agreed to make any. You are currently #3.
And I would suggest exactly what you are thinking. Stick with the plywood, it is lightweight and strong. I to am concerned about gouging it so I would pick a thin, lightweight (relatively), durable material that could be screwed directly to the plywood structure.
The best part is that most materials can be cut by my laser guy at the same time he cuts the plywood panel (except alum.) So you could have a material of your choice cut and applied to the plywood. The advantage to that is that I can position the plywood down in the box a bit so that the top is still flush.
All that aside, the undercoated plywood on mine is holding up very well and I severely abuse it. As the base model it works very well and is considerably more durable than the worn out carpet.
And, as I mentioned before, your original price range estimate is very close. I am still waiting for the bill from the laser cutter, I have broken down all the hardware prices, and I am still waiting for my final number of hours invested, but it looks like the tailgate box should be right around $200-225. Seems expensive to me, but things add up very quickly. More on that latter, we can save the final price info for the new thread that is coming as soon as it is finished and I have all the numbers in.
Back to the fun tech stuff like what we could cut and attach to the top. I am thinking a thin sheet of black textured plastic could be an upgrade option. I will check with my laser guy to see if he has anything.

Just a friendly reminder from your friendly mod. Kevin is doing a great job of steering the conversation towards tech. He is appropriately putting price/time frame/ordering questions off until he begins to market the boxes.
Please help him out by following his lead. This is the Tech forum. It is more useful to all of us, especially in the long run, to keep things tech.
Thanks for your attention.

I dug out my spare tailgate today to make an example out of it. Poor tailgate
So you can see that once the carpet is pulled off there is a very easy cut line to follow.

You can see where the 3 ribs are spot welded in, with a normal length jigsaw blade you can cut right through them if you go slow.

There is one section that you can not cut with the jig saw, if you do you will cut into the latch. I just use a cutoff wheel for that little bit, or you could block up the jig saw a bit, or use a shorter blade.
If you remove the inspection cover you can see the problem area.
I've attached a pic that shows the interference as well.

Once the center is pulled out, remove the ends of the ribs by tweaking them back and forth until the spot weld breaks.
And then you have a big hole in your tailgate with a pile of scrap metal next to it.

I know I'm a tard, but it's gonna hurt my feelings to cut my tailgate. Other than the dented up rear quarter my truck is a completely rust free body.
Oh well, guess it's gotta happen sometime.
Thanks again kevin for blazing the trail. Stellar work, and a great contribution to the community.

Tech content: what do you recommend to cover/coat plywood so dogs don't slip off when they jump in?
(think I'm kiddin? pup ate the carpet piece so I pulled it off. realized that was a mistake when the grownup dobers wouldn't jump in cuz they didn't like sliding off the other side. )
Thanks. Oh, and will you be doing inner quarter panels in the FS thread as well? Pretty please?

That undercoat is nice and grippy (but still semi-gloss so the dirt wipes right off)
My pup only started jumping in the tailgate AFTER I put that stuff on, has no problem now.
And I will definitely do some 1/4s as well. There was more interest in the tailgate boxes so I tried that first. The 1/4s will need to be on a more custom basis though, there are differences between the 60s & 62s, rear speakers, some folks might want a rear washer bottle holder, profile changes if truck still has full trim, rear seat belts, ect.ect. But if things go well I will make some of them too.

Cool
And while you are here we can cut out your tailgate as well (since I happen to have all the tools laying around) Might not be worth the 3.5 hour drive though.
