I had a 670 Holley Truck Avenger. Never again. While it performed off road on slopes as advertised, it was just a miserable to drive gas hog with no low end off idle torque. And you cannot jet it down enough to get any kind of economy out of it. By the time it starts getting into that parameter, it starts backfiring through the carb. Because much of the time the secondaries don't get used, the secondary fuel boil would evaporate empty because the needle tip would fuse itself shut to the seat. You can imagine the bog this caused. I spent the better part of a year trying to make it work, and then threw in the towel and went QuadraJet.
The QuadraJet is, in my opinion, the best 4-bbl there is for a SBC in a Land Cruiser. It idles well. It has excellent off idle performance, and excellent low end torque and response. My 350 will now lug down almost as good as a straight six. Economy is good. I picked up about three mpg over the Truck Avenger. The secondaries do not have hot fuel nor starve for fuel, as the fuel bowl is common with the primaries. While the carb is not a simple to work on as a Holley, and lacks support parts, if you get one sized properly for your application, you should not need to do much more than set the idle mixture, the idle speed, and the choke.
I have not run an Edelbrock on my Land cruiser, but I have one on my pickup. Also had a 670 Truck Avenger on it's engine, a Chevy 454. Miserable fuel mileage. And the throttle response was mushy. Put on the Edelbrock, and the throttle response is crisp and the low end is more streetable. Edelbrock makes these in an offroad version. I think the Quadrjet is superior, but this would be my next choice for a 4-bbl.
If you do want to run a Holley, take a real hard look at your maximum rpm, and your cruising rpm. I doubt many FJ40 owners get over 4000 rpm. I know I don't, and cruise is 3200 at best. Thus, the 470 cfm Truck Avenger is probably a much better choice than the 670 Truck Avenger. Another alternative it so take a mild non-smog 600 and put the offroad spring loaded needle and seats in it.
One carb that's highly spoken of, but you rarely see on a Chevy, is the Autolite 2-bbl. These carbs are dirt simple. And they work well unmodified, even at steep angles. I was going to go this route but came across a decent Quadrajet first.
Oh, and my 350 is stock with an Edelbrock Performer manifold, small tube block hugger heaqders, and single exhaust.
