Welding Oil Pan?

I have the typical leak in my oil pan caused by cracks in the welds where the protective plate attaches to the bottom of the pan.

I have no experience with welding but has anyone every tried to just weld around the entire circumference of interface of the protective plate and the pan itself?

I realize that this might be a little tricky (which is why I would take it to a weld shop) but it seems like this would seal everything up.
