I took the bolts/spring/plunger out of mine and soaked it in Berryman's, then on to the parts washer. I also used a small bottle brush and I did get a bunch of goop out of mine. Same with the cooler/exchanger part, but I used CLR in the water jacket.
On some years, one of the two bolts was drilled and tapped for 1/8bsp so I did that to mine so I could run both the stock sender and a mechanical gauge.
