I didn't want to hold anyone or any rigs up on the run, but it could have happened to anyone at anytime on any trail. After thinking about it, I think we have both been pretty fortunate on breakage given the weight and abuse we have dealt the 60's. Me even more so with stock axles in the front. . .
Just get gears dude, it is beyond a night and day difference on the trail. If you chop it up, I think you are going to lose 90% of what you love in the wagon. I could be way off though. . .

D,
Its a combination of both the size of the rig and the weight of the rig that is the issue and I feel that it limits what I can do with the rig. Im of the opinion that if these two things could happen with this rig, it would be more manuverable, and less prone to break. If I did a full exo cage, Id be less concerned with what is scraping and slamming and be more comfortable, but its still a really HEAVY rig that is (IMO) gonna be more apt to break when crawling on trails like the Rubicon and also, require much more attention in the tight spots. For ME anyway...You might not experience the same phenominon, but (especially that last run) I felt like a bull in a china shop in that rig. As you stated though, the gear reduction may cause everything to change by allowing for more control.
This isnt a recent issue Ive been struggling with.
Nothing can happen till the Vortec goes in.
BTW, you broke your axel?!
