They tried (feebly) to charge me for the extra 15 quarts (not kidding) but I just laughed.

Oh yeah! Beat this for a dealership oil and lube noob story...
My sister owned a little Geo Metro commuter car that she took into a GM dealer for an oil change, things went well until the tranny seized on the highway a couple of hours after she picked it up. She had it towed home and I took a look. Engine oil level was twice as high as it should be... which led me to investigate further.
As it turns out the trans-axle was empty of oil. The Lube Noob inadvertently drained the trans-axle from underneath the car while it was on the hoist, put the plug back in, lowered the car and used the auto-dispensing oil gun to fill the engine, obviously without checking the dip stick.
The bearings in a manual transmission can run for quite a while on boundry layer lubrication! She drove the car to the next town and back down the freeway then drove it to work before the transmission seized - must of been the better part of 80 km (50 miles) or so.
The shop manager at the dealership didn't believe my synopsis over the phone. He came by the house and took a look for himself, at that time he agreed that they would pay for the rebuilding of the tranny!
