So I don't get it. Why not just cut off the piece thar wraps around off your rear bumper now and build up some more burly protection and call it a day? Do you not want to smash the rear of the body or just break parts in general? I started thinking the way I *think* you are after I broke the rear shaft at Rubicon. I didn't want to hold anyone or any rigs up on the run, but it could have happened to anyone at anytime on any trail. After thinking about it, I think we have both been pretty fortunate on breakage given the weight and abuse we have dealt the 60's. Me even more so with stock axles in the front. . .
Just get gears dude, it is beyond a night and day difference on the trail. If you chop it up, I think you are going to lose 90% of what you love in the wagon. I could be way off though. . .
