Depending on your front driveline type, it may hit the side of the sm420. I know for a fact that a late fj40 driveline (using 11mm bolts) will hit with some if not all of the plate style adapters. The AA adapter moves the yoke of the driveline further back where the sm420 case is narrower and therefore does not hit, even with the driveline mentioned above. Generally you can grind the sm420 case where they hit to provide the clearance needed. Just don't grind too far. I've seen that problem as well. From my experience, the sm420 case is about 3/8" thick in this area. There are also two types of sm420 cases, early and late. I've been told that the crossover point is about 1958. The sm420 was used from about 1946 to 1967. the later cases will have reinforment ribs on the front of the case and these may also have clearance isses when using the plate style adapters.

The plate adapter has the "potential" advantage of being shorter vs, the 5" long AA adapter. I've also seen a broken AA adapter housing as well but I can't say how it was treated or abused. I've never seen a broken plate adapter. That being said, I ran the AA style adapter for years without any issues.

FYI, I have no experience with the EBI adapter. Perhaps it rotates the t-case so driveline clearance is no longer a concern?
