I think a better approach would be to hear him out and try to learn what his perspective is. It is very difficult to change someones mind if you try to beat them into submission, it has to be their idea. Once you understand where he's coming from you can make intelligent arguments. I have accidently learned things with this approach. You can also gain allies in the fight, ultimately you are both on the same side.

Keep your friends close, your adversaries even closer...
