I ran a gutted smog pump for about 4 years with no problems. Now I've switched to a second alternator ala kevin rowland style. It uses an FJ62 motor mount that has the pivot bolt hole integrated. The mount is cut to allow full swing of the alternator. I used the stock pulley (Kevin somehow found a larger pulley, that I can't find anywhere) and a 44" belt. Right now, the alt sits right against the PS gearbox so I think a slightly shorter belt is in order but it is running fine. I scored big on the alt, I had bought an FJ62 alt and all the associated hardware from a guy in seattle but found that the 62 alt wouldn't fit. So I called the local wrecker whom I knew had a 60 in the yard. It still had the alt and for $50 I had a super clean, Toyota Factory rebuilt ND alt in my hands. That's God working for sure.
I still have the gutted smog pump if you'd like to run it for awhile until you decide on something different.
