Suggestion for a good mpg car. Consider a 90's vintage Tercell w/ manual or Corolla. These seem to get better than 40mpg, even at 70-75mph. Of course a good VW diesel you can get better than 50mpg, but the reliability might be an issue, unless you like working on it.
