And although I didn't mention it in my original report, I DID actually try it with direct 12v, it killed the remote. 
But I still have it in the same location at the front of the truck and its still working flawlessly.  |
My remote takes a little tiny 12v battery, Maybe you can find a universal or replacement that uses 12v.
