front wheel drive have strange linkage issues come up. I had a 1991 ford escort gt, and i had to replace the clutch. i messed up the linkage on that pos and couldn't hit 2, 4, or Rev gear for 3 weeks until i took it apart again and fixed it.

The shifter does have a linkage, and that indeed can get messed up (the Tercel I had, the lower boot on the shifter leaked, allowing water into the linkage area, and it froze solid!), but I still don't see what that has to do with the clutch. If the clutch is totally gone, you still should be able to shift. I used to shift my Tercel without disengaging the clutch all the time, just for practice.
So, the one in question probably has no clutch, AND a messed up linkage (or something wrong with the tranny).
