You pulled the pinion shaft. then pull the axles snug into recess in the side gear, pull out the thrust block and the ring around it, then push the axles in, remove the c clip, and pull the axles out.
It sounds weird Dan, it isn't a difficult operation, usually. Is the ring hanging up on the short shaft of the third pinion gear?
