So did they die faster than should be expected of a good springs? How long was that, and what should I expect, within reason, out of a set of springs that I'm wheelin- say once every couple of weeks on moderate to semi-difficult trails. (I don't spend much time in the rocks bouldering.)

If I recall correctly, they were dead after about a season. He had another set of the same springs laying around and put those on and then the same thing repeated itself. Soft and high arc springs just don’t seem to go together :( His truck rides great but the shackles make it very loose, too loose for my tastes. He also ripped a frame mount off because of the extra leverage they supplied. He doesn’t wheel that truck hard. My suggestion is to use springs with very little arc, whether it be on bottom or on top of the axle.

Well, Thanks for the info. That's what I needed to know. I guess on to look at some of the other ideas. Maybe I'll go with some 55 series springs. It makes sense that they would give me a flatter spring with lots of travel. Starting the thought process over again. (Better to start it over now though than after having bought springs I guess!)

60/62 Series rear springs are a lot easier to find than 55 Series rear springs, yet are nearly the same dimensions.

That's good news! I think that I may have a set off of my Dad's old 60 laying around.
Or should I get new stock height? I'm going to have to research this a little more. Any more input on what all I would need to do to make these fit? (Extend my spring mounts, longer shackles, etc?) Also what kind of lift would i get out of them? (Or would I need to go with lifted 60 springs?) Thanks guys!

you need to either move your rear spring hanger or go a longer shackle.

you may have to flip the shock mount to the other side of the Xmember,
and you'll need a longer rear driveshaft, and probably a longer rear brake soft line.

Thanks, for the info. Since my budget is tight right now, maybe I'll look into using the 60 springs. Do they need to be taller than stock though? Could somebody pipe in on that? Also, had a thought this morning about Ultimate SUA: Seems most people are ok with the front springs from MAF Safari kits, plus if they used them in rock crawling competitions like advertised they must be ok. So why not use those up front with a set of Alcans with Orbit eyes out back? Seems like a person might save a little money and have an awesome flexing ride. Anybody done this before?

I dunno it's a good question though. Have to measure the length of the springs front to rear and center to end. Not sure why the fronts flex better unless it's the engine weight. One could always remove one or more of the smaller springs to help with the flex.

not "ultimate", but my old hack setup worked well this weekend. no wheeling pics yet, but it did ok on the 30 degree ramp.

more important than outright flex is having flex balanced front to rear. my old setup had great rear flex, and little front flex... wheeling this new setup is so much better, the body sits level through almost anything,

Question

So bear with me here cuz I'm not trying to . Bad_Religion_AU, are those stock height 55 springs that you've modified, or are they lifted 55 springs? If they're lifted, what lift size? Also, where did you get the longer leafs that you put back in? Thanks!

standard (good condition) 55 springs.

the rears are standard 55 pack minus the overload spring. next trip out i'll probably try one more leaf in the pack because the rear is a touch softer than the front.

fronts are from the same 55.

tbe fronts are made up of a combo of the longest leafs from the standard 40 pack that came out, and the 55 pack.

Thanks for the info Bad_Religion_AU. I'm going to try to see if I can find a full set of 60 series springs and do a similar set up. I noticed on the previous page of this thread that you said that you re-drilled the spring mounts. Could you maybe give me a little more detail on that? A pic or two would be great too if you had some!

I flipped my rears yesterday. I'll have a better idea of how it works after this weekend. Oh and in doing so, I increased my wheelbase by 3" in the rear, and the tires are centered in the wheelwells (that always bugged me that they were more towards the front). This mod necessitates a longer driveshaft and longer brake line.
