My block just has a 2F stamped on the plate, no other numbers there. Does not appear to be tampered with at all. It's in an fj40 that was manufactured in 10/78. PO said he thought it was original.

It's not original. It is a service replacement block.

There is a casting date on the LH side of the block, though it can be hard to see w/ the engine installed. Hidden by the manifolds, downpipe, etc.

Build date: 12/78
VIN (verified on the frame, firewall, and door jam): FJ40-297066
Engine serial #: 2F 336097

It took some scraping through the gunk to get to the engine serial number. Also, there are two numbers on the drivers side engine block:

11411
61011

What are these numbers?

That's the toyota part number for the engine block.

Is there any way to tell whether or not my engine is the original that came with the rig when it was new? The serial number seems to be in the right range, but is there a definitive way to look that up?

AFAIK, no record exists in English of what engine serial numbers went into what chassis numbers.

If the block casting date closely matches the dates on other compnents that seem to be original (cyl. head, carb, T-case, ring gear, etc) then it's a fair assumption that the vehicle is original.

Graphs Of The Data

Thought I'd graph time vs serial numbers to see what production volumes looked like for the years that we have data so far. Looks pretty linear to me! I only entered data where BOTH the month and the year were available, and either the engine serial number or the frame serial number were available (I entered a 0 if one or the other wasn't given).

Note the three outliers on the following graph (around 1977 and 1978). Those are for the FJ55's.

If you have an original 2F in your 40 or 55, please post up your engine serial number, and the month/year of your truck build and the vin if you would. I am trying to complie 2F year data.

I will be posting this up in the 60 section as well.

Thank you for your help!

Based on what I've been reading, I guess that mean it's not original engine, right?

Actually those numbers both match a 9/76 build date, so I think you have an original engine in it.
