I don't want fumes, etc... entering the cabin.
A PO removed the original carb and the current one does not have the fuel return line. It is capped at the tank... Thus only one hose. I think.
Thanks.

Ah. Well, that certainly isn't the only hole into the cab. If it concerns you, though, clean the rubber grommet really well and put a piece of black vinyl tape over it. Or use some weatherstrip adhesive to glue a circle of rubber over the hole. If you go to a stock carb in the future, you can just remove the patch.

What was the asking price of the 40? I'm just curious as to the market for clean 40's, not Ebay market, but real-world market.
Sweet find, great job tackling all those leaks up-front. I'd be still driving it and just park it out on the street to keep the drive clean...

Nice Rig
The photo of the engine compartment does not jive with my Fed spec 78. The line to your brake booster comes from the intake manifold and the port on your air cleaner goes to the valve cover.

054-16B TOP WATERHOUSE-1968-1/79 NO OIL COOLER
054-16C TOP WATERHOUSE-8/76-1/79 W/OIL COOLER
So clearly Toyota made some rigs with an oil cooler and some without. I am guessing it was an option.
FWIW, This diagram shows the components that make up the oil cooler. And this page shows that there are two different oil filter assemblies (one for oil cooler equipped rigs and one for not).

The oil cooler was not an option on 78 model year. I do not think it came with one on FED spec non CA, non high altitude 40s. At least that is what the parts department at Desert Toyota told me.

I am glad to see you went with matte black for the finish. I did gloss and it must be handled with care to prevent scratches. They all look perfect!

Wow, actual, real progres made on the rig today. I mean parts actually went back on!
I got my Tuffy box, seats, and newly restored rear heater in. The PO had installed a sub-woofer and it was a tight fit with the old heater. With the new one, it wouldn't fit at all. So I had to refrabricate the mount for the amp under the seat..
Then the tuffy box is a really tight fit between the seats. It took a bit of wrangling to get all the bolts to line up nicely again.
I had some help though... (10 year old son)
Whew!

That inside looks soooooooooo sweet!
Do you have the plastic cover for the sending unit? I might have one around someplace.
Is that Console the 024 model? it looks HUGE in depth that is. How does your elbow and arm rest on it?
Also be careful if you remove the clips off the heater cover. They are new and come off at a high rate of speed. Push thumb in the center of clip while pulling the tab end away from lower bracket and this will relieve tension. (if you need to center top) But it looks good!

You know I'm not sure. I'll look at the docs that came with it. It is much bigger than I thought it would be, but it seemed pretty comfortable when I did my imaginary test drive after getting the seats installed. I was imagining how tight my steering would feel once I get it all re-assembled

Yup, I disovered that (a) i needed to adjust it and (b) those clips fly off at a great rate of speed. Thanks again for doing such a nice job on it!

Thanks. It looks far better in pictures (and at 10-15 feet) than it does up close an personal. But it really is in great shape.

Are sure that isn't a FJ60 tuffy console?
Also when do you want me to glue that captive nut on to the battery tray?

Yes, I'm sure. The mounting brackets fit like a glove.
I'll be gone this weekend, so maybe you could come over the week after the 4th? I'd appreciate your help getting my hubs back together....

More progress! Finally!
I *finally* got my oil pan re-installed. I was in serious procrastinate mode with it... for some reason I was really relucatant to just dive in and get the damn thing up there. First I dawdled until my local Toy dealer had FPIG in stock.
Then I had to find some studs and grind slots in the heads to make it easier to guide the pan into place.
Then I finally just did it. Next time it will take me about an hour. This time it took me several months.
I also got my "new" rear 3.73 3rd member installed. I ran out of time to put the rear axle but that should go quick.
Next up is getting the front 3rd in place and to start re-assembling my front hubs.

I have just purchased a 78 as well. On my dash there are two holes cut out on either end. from looking t at your pics looks like there are blowers which i assume are derost vents. Was this stock on the 78? or was it a factory option?? I am having a hard time trying to locate the vents, any suggestions??

I believe they are stock. Might check with cruiserdan to see if Toyota still stocks them.

My dash is a 78' with factory defrost tubes installed, I see them occasionally on Evilbay, look all about the used venders and ask Mark at Marks offroad he may be able to help you. good luck, you truck is a beauty. A fine piece of history your lucky to share the fun of a project like this with your young son, what a great bonding experience, trust me he will remember these days fondly for the rest of his life; I know I did with my Dad. Take Care KC

If you feel the need to plug it and it has no use, try using a rubber grommet seal like there is in the floor pan and door sill at various points. You should be able to track down something the right size and look. If it looks like the ones that are already there it will pass as stock and only an ubercrusiergeek will be able to tell the difference. (thats only about half the ppl here on mud!)
Nice rig by the way

My 8/78 does not have them. I'm not sure when Toyota started shipping cruisers with the added side window defrosters. I do not think they were optional, but I could be wrong.
