so I ordered a boatload of bolts from mcmasster carr and let me say it is a VERY NICE thing to have an assortment of new bolts on hand. I was not concerned with JIS and the bolts are silver in color but plated for wear resistance. For a few items I will need to get the OEM bolts but overall I think this will save me mucho bucks in the long run. I basically used the reccomendations from this thread.

I spent a few hundred $$ on fasteners. Looking at what I took off, and looking at what is on the truck now....it was worth it.

Are you keeping a list of nuts / bolts on your FJ55? I'd like to see how sizes compare. Plus I'll need a list of FJ55 bolts one day!

I will hopefully get the bolt list updated in a couple of weeks with new sizes for alot of the bolts for the body.

Guppie-------

Do you have a list of the ones you did end up ordering?

How much did it cost you?

Any pictures of what Mcmaster carr bolts look like

Thanks

no pics, nothing fancy, they are just silver zinc plated, nice looking I think. I could not find the cadium plating so I went this route. They are not JIS heads either, but this was not important to me as much as others. I tend to do rebuilds nicely but not perfect restorations so not concerned about bolt details. I basically just took the reccomended bolt sizes from this thread and ordered a bunch of bolts, washers, lock washers, and nuts. I basically stuck to M6, M8 and M10. So far it has worked well for me. I don't plan to record every bolt size I use on the 55 rebuild as I am guessing that most of them should be similar sizes. I spent about $200 and got a boatload of hardware. Hope this helps.

If you have that XLS spreadsheet started I would like to get a copy of it. I'm interested in seeing the totals for some of these bolts!

I'm really interested in anything you guys have as I'm about to start down the restoration path after the Gilmer, Tx gathering.

I'll be glad to contribute to the list when we're done and thanks for your work making this list

I have searched hi and low for the best deal on nuts and bolts, and believe I found the place.

http://www.allensfasteners.com/

Check it out...

Here's an example for 10 pieces. $2.80 TOTAL. And shipping is cheap... (one price for 10 or 500, so the more you buy the cheaper)

ALL STAINLESS
6mm- 1.00 X HEX HEAD (STAINLESS)
6mm-1.00 X 20 HEX CS (SS)
$0.17 x10= $1.70

METRIC STAINLESS LOCK WASHER
M6 (STAINLESS) LOCK WASHER
$0.06 x10= $0.60

METRIC STAINLESS FLAT WASHER
M6 (STAINLESS) FLAT WASHER
$0.05 x10= $0.50

Cool List with prices

OK here is two list of bolts from the Allen Fastener place posted by thecrazygreek.

Stainless Vs Zinc. Bottom line: For the amount listed there is only $63.50 difference between them!

I have an email into them asking if these are JIS. I don't think they will be.

Bolts
Size x pitch x length $(SS) $(Zinc) Qty
6mm x 1.0 x 10mm .12 .07 50
6mm x 1.0 x 20mm .17 .11 100
6mm x 1.0 x 25mm .17 .12 50

8mm x 1.25 x 16mm .24 .31 50
8mm x 1.25 x 20mm .25 .35 100
8mm x 1.25 x 25mm .28 .36 150
8mm x 1.25 x 30mm .29 .37 50
8mm x 1.25 x 35mm .30 .48 100

Flat Washers
Size $(SS) $(Zinc) Qty

6mm .05 .02 200
8mm .08 .03 450
10mm .14 .05 75
12mm .22 .08 25

Lock Washers

Size $(SS) $(Zinc) Qty

6mm .06 .02 200
8mm .12 .03 450
10mm .18 .06 75
12mm .22 .07 25

Total for all Stainless = $302
Total for all Zinc = $238.50

Not bad for 2150 pieces! Great find there `thecrazygreek!

NOT GEEK!!! hehe...

I still havent found a better deal anywhere on the net. And to top it off, they are quick to ship, and quality seems to be top notch.

Just a question about Zinc vs. stainless. Is there a difference in the strength of the bolt due to the difference in alloy? Any metalurgists out there?

pardon me! Guess I need to get better bi-focals? I have fixed the post!

I'm placing an order tomorrow. I'm tired of all the searching and don't think anyone will best that price soon.

Yes there is, the zinc bolts are stronger and should be used where critical strength is an issue.

I didn't see a listing for the bolts to hook the engine to the engine stand.

They are 12X1.75 80 - 100 mm, depending on the configuration of your stand.

Also, they should be hardened, not your standard off the shelf bolt.

Thanks CM.. .all this much appreciated. I have to do some ordering soon so I need to go back to Melissa's excel file.

I think she mentioned a place (maybe on this thread..I'll have to check) that charged no shipping????!!!! If so.. wonder if there is a limit to weight... b/c I'm gonna give them one, very large, order.

Much appreciated.

Come on folks lets finish this!

Remember we need ALL the information about the fastener! Use metric!

Year and model of truck
# used
thread diameter (3, 4, 5, 5.5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 12mm)
thread pitch (0.5, 0.7, 1.0, 1.25, 1.5, 1.75mm)
total length of bolt (8-100mm)
length of shoulder (no thread area) if bolt has one
washers used (split,flat, internal toothed)
Head diameter (wrench size) if larger head will fit say so. That way one knows if a non JIS bolt will work
nut size (wrench size) if nut used

By the way the US is one of only 5 countries in the world that still use English measurments!

NASA recently stated that an international commitee has declared that any future mission or base on the MOON be metric.

Land Cruiser Moon Buggy?
