Thanks for the info!
Spray with acrylic enamel, then wet sand, but don't polish, or polish very lightly by hand until it's just as old lookin' as you want

Wow nice!

Will this "seal" off the metal and prevent rust?
( assuming one properly eliminates the rust before painting )

Thanks again!

Yes, just saying prep and paint as normal, but use a single stage acrylic enamel like the factory did.

Then you can wet sand, stopping short of the superfine steps, and get a less-shiny, but still not dull finish.

I'm very happy with DuPont Nason Ful-Cryl II. In my experience, if you use their recommended hardener, even freshly sprayed, it doesn't have the ultra-mega-superwet-exotic-turbodeep-nitrogloss look... It kind of looks like fresh old-school Toyota truck paint.

I planned on doing the wet sand routine I just recommended to you on the 40 I'm painting now, but I'm really happy with the way its turning out using the Nason as recommended... not trying to slam them... I like the "new" old-school truck look.

Just be careful, because it is an economy line, and the Nason hardener (483-11 Cat II Catalyst) is more expensive than the el-cheapo "wet look" hardener. Don't let the paint supply store do you the favor of saving you money by steering you into the cheaper bling-bling hardener. Buy the 483-11 if you go with Ful-Cryl.

Here you go, the tire carrier shows the original paint, and it is a bit dusty. The fender shows the new paint.

Looks great.

How much did you polish your fender?

One could in theory polish less and get a more dull/less wet look if one was inclined?

Very cool

Now if i could only find the color code for t-333 tropical coral :(

There are chemicals now that you can add to the paint to create a flat look vs. a polished look. You still get the protection of the clear coat, just not the shine.

No polish or sanding. I think the fleet grade looks like new "old" truck paint straight out of the gun.

What brand of fleet grade paint do you use? How does it hold up long term?

----->DuPont Nason FulCryl II with their hardener

I've only used it once before, and I only kept the truck a couple of years, so can't comment on the long-term, but it was durable. The factory used acrylic enamel, and if this fades, it will just look more natural.

Acrylic urethane would probably be even more durable, but I don't have any experience with it.

Knock on wood, in my limited experience with it, I'm very happy with the FulCryl II. It's easy to spray, and looks just like I want it to.

I do not like the look of 2 stage (clear coat) on an FJ40.

The problem is, no one can tell you how much flattener to ad to achieve a certain result. Or, at least no one in this area. Hell, just buy the cheapest paint you can find and park it outside here in the desert for a couple of years. You'll get there.

I was thinking of sourcing my acrylic enamel paint through these guys in portland:

Welcome to Imperial Paint!

Any one see anything that would dissuade them from using this place?

Thanks

Yes. That looks like an industrial paint supplier.

I would recommend using automotive paint from an auto body supply store.

Nice pics Destin.

You know what...the more I look at your rig, and those nice pics, the more I just want to clear coat it, and keep it just the way it is...she just looks too cool

Edit...I just used that middle pic as my desktop back ground

nice

I would love to leave it the way it is, but i do not want it to rust away.
I want this to be around for another 45 years

I think the clear coating would just trap the rust underneath and it would just keep rusting... a proper blasting and painting is the only option

Don't do it, man! Skip the clearcoat. Just put a couple coats of wax on it. Oh, and a soft top and doors.

You can restore it as many times as you want, but it's only original once!

I hear ya man

But waxing will not prevent it from rusting the metal if the metal is already getting bits of surface rust..
I want this thing to last another 45 years.

I think a total media blasting and painting is the only option I have to preserve it.
It will look old again in another 45 years

I pulled my hardtop apart a month ago or so and discovered that cyngus white was in no way the original white color of my hardtop. That's not to say that some weren't painted that way, but my 78 dune beige was not. Good thing I only bought a quart.

It could have already been painted by the PO.

I have to agree with destin on this. Here in AZ you can get away with it. But not in Portland. I've lived there as a kid it to wet most of the year.

haha ok

soooo, it is definitely not tropical coral red as the original color...

Looked at the test spray, and it looked barbi pink with a hint of salmon.
like wayyy tinted out.

so looks like the only other color it could be for 1964 is solar red?

anyone have the paint code for solar red?

The peeps painting my truck said the stuff i ordered was of questionable quality...
( basically had no idea what brand it was )
Any of you have an early 60's fj40 in solar red?

Any other red it could possibly be?
