1970 FJ40 rebuild-up

Figured I'd introduce myself since i've only posted a few posts on here,

I'm currently rebuilding my cruiser currently i need a lot of wiring work and all those little time consuming things. I know this thread is worthless without pics but i'll get some up at the end of this weekend with my progress on some tubework as i just got a bender.

Anyways the specs are as follows:

1970 FJ40
SM465 transmission
chevy 350 (320hp 400ft/lbs)
Taurus fan
Monte Carlo radiator
4"SUA lift for now
37" MTR's
32 gallon fuel cell recessed in the bed area
Saginaw power steering
Lame twin steering arm (needing high steer)
Full autometers
Twin Sticked etc.

I will be doing a bit of tube work this weekend for a rollcage and front bumper/stinger and will post up pics. The previous owner or maybe two previous decided it was in his best intrest to build a roll cage out of galvanized pipe .

Anyways i took this thing out twice after i finished building it from the previous owner and flopped it and it caught on fire (i.e. the reason i have no electrical,no switches, no gauges.

Some questions i do have for those in the know, i have a housing that was supposedely cut and turned but how do i check prior to using it if it's right and done correctly?

Also i have seen wiring diagrams and those have helped but has anybody wired one of these things from scratch and have a write up?

Anyways here are some old old pics as there all i got right now

Garage
Welcome.

Post up a couple pics of the housing, especially where the knuckles meet the housing..as this area is what would end up being suspect for starters....

Good luck!

Welcome Desertboy!

Sweet looking cruiser. If you are really starting from scratch (which I would suggest if everything has been hacked up) you can get a good kit from any of the big manufacturers like painless wiring.

Electrical stuff if all hacked up can really suck. You can spend most of your time chasing down what wire is going where because the wire you are looking for is no longer there. Pulling the old and redoing it all at once would probably be less headache in the long run, not to mention safety.

Is your cruiser flat black or is it from the fire?

Keep us posted.

cruiser is flat black from rattle can after i sanded the fire damage down was blue before, after it's done it will be satin black like my tow rig as i wan them to match. May seem lame but who has a 95 dodge 3500 dually satin black. I do striping on the side for extra cash so satin black is my mainstay.

As to the electronics, i have nothing to start from the dash was burned out as was most of my engine electrical, i had traded my dual case toy pickup for this thing so there is no way i'm giving up on it i just don't know where to start with absolutely no electric.

I'm going to start with an ez-wire 21 circuit but after that i got nothing besdes engine electrical that salvagable, things like horn relays that i see in wiring diagrams are nothing but dust in the wind, oh by the way i can fab whatever but i can't wire anyhting more complex then a taurus fan soooo..

Centech makes a sweet kit that is easy to understand and broken down into "packages" for differnet areas. Great instructions too. Call Custom Cruisers in Gilroy, CA and ask for the kit or give me your # and Ill have him call you. They are very busy and lag at return calls sometimes. Its about $200-$300 , but well worth it.

i thought the cut and turn was only done on an soa.

nice rig desertboy, mine caught on fire last year and as long as you keep a cold beer in your hand the fire shouldn't last too long. that is, if you can keep from spilling it as you rollover. i still had to rewire a bunch of crap too. good luck.

keep it the color that it is!!! Real cruiser are painted with rattle-can so they can be touched up after a day on the trail.
