Tach wiring problems

I have a little SunPro or whateverthecrap from AZ and installed it yesterday. After running the red/white/black wires to where they needed to go the directions say to run the green out to the (-) end of the coil. Well I did that and the damn thing is saying Im running at 3000 rpm's at ide. I set the selector to 6 cyls..

What the crap am I missing? Is it defective? It has a good ground, I used the bolt at the bottom of the fuse panel, good power, and a brand new, soldered piggyback wire to the coil.

Did you set it for a 6 cylinder? should be a switch on the back of the tach for 4, 6, 8 cylinder option..

he says he did. I had one where there was not a switch, you had to clip on of the wires. But it sounds like its hooked up just like mine.

I just put one on mine...the only thing I could guess...did you possibly put it on the positive of the coil..not sure what would happen if you did that. Could be a loose connection where you have in hooked into the fuse box.......maybe your cruiser is idling at 3000rpm....ouch...Mine is idling at 1400 and I'm about to go out and fudge around with the carb, timing, dizzy etc. to see what the hell is goin on with it.

Nah, I know its not idling at 3K. It would be screaming if it were, lol.
The coil has a (-) on it and that is where I soldered it to. I wired straight to the fuse panel with one of those little barrel fuse clips and then used a female clip to hook to it.

I installed a 4 circuit batt fuse block and a 4 circuit ACC fuse block from AZ. Soldered all connections and they are both running through the alternator. Maybe I should hook the tach to that, but I dont see why it would matter, my little plug on the fuse panel is getting ~13.8V and that is testing on the fused side where I have the clip.

If you're having problems with high idle, start with the throttle return spring and then the idle screw. Then hit the base of the carb and intake with starter fluid to check for vac. leaks.

Do you have a condensor on the points side of the coil? Maybe the points are arcing or bouncing fooling the tach into thinking it is spinning faster than it really is.
